Recording a track for Dolly Parton at Sear Sound, NYC. Had to go Bluegrass MacGyver with the paper towel due to some string rattle on the old J35.

Greetings everyone,

Well, evidently this March is a time to celebrate guitar heroes. I just started teaching an online class on my main guy, Clarence White. And within the last several days we've marked the centennials of both Wes Montgomery and Doc Watson. I didn’t realize that those two nearly came in on the same train!

I had a very special opportunity to celebrate Doc recently, getting to back up Dolly Parton on The Last Thing On My Mind, the track she contributed to the upcoming tribute album I Am A Pilgrim: Doc at 100. The reference was a rehearsal video from MerleFest 2001 when Doc and Dolly sang it together and broke everyone’s hearts. And Dolly broke mine again when I heard her vocals added to my guitar tracks. Unfortunately I didn’t get to be in the studio with her but that’s just as well - she worked her magic, weaving vocal lines around what I had laid down. Dolly first recorded the song in 1967 with Porter Wagoner and in this latest version she’s bringing a whole new approach to it, full of grit and emotional depth. Thanks to producer Matt Stevens who’s done a phenomenal job with this project featuring a bunch of wonderful artists, which is out April 28 to coincide with MerleFest. FYI I also play on Make Me Down A Pallet On Your Floor with Steve Earle (not sure when that's coming out!)

Here's the track - The Last Thing On My Mind (Tom Paxton). Just me and Dolly!

My monthly residency continues at the venerable Rockwood Music Hall in NYC this Wednesday, March 8 with Breakfast Special. It’s a reunion of the mid-70s madcap bluegrass outfit which included future legends Kenny Kosek, Andy Statman, and Tony Trischka. BS shows are fun - sometimes hilarious - and I’m thrilled to be part of the current incarnation, along with Jared Engel on bass. Please join us for an 8:30pm show if you’re in the area!

Playing the hottest jam of 1925, The Prisoner's Song with Breakfast Special last Summer at the Rockwood Music Hall in NYC.

This May I have my first festival gig as a solo artist in a little while, at Imagine Zero in Brandon, VT on May 13. This festival aspires to zero carbon and zero waste. Hop in your electric vehicles, scooters, handcars or whatever floats your climate-friendly boat and join us for a day of good music in a beautiful spot for a worthy cause.

This Summer I’ll be hitting festivals from the West Coast to Western Europe with Jacob Jolliff. We’ll start with Cowichan Valley Bluegrass on Vancouver Island, BC on June 17-18. Then on June 25-26 we’ll be in the Netherlands for the Rotterdam Bluegrass Festival. July 17-18 it’s back across the pond for Crossover Festival in Nottingham, UK and then back to Vermont on Aug 18 for Green Mountain Bluegrass & Roots (check out that lineup - holy wow!!)

On the educational front, tonight I start Intro to Bluegrass Mandolin, a six week Zoom class that meets March 7 - April 11, Tuesday nights from 7:45-9:15pm Eastern. There is an opening or two still available- please reach out if you’re interested in hopping on board. Fee is $225 and the full info is here

I’ve got plenty of other classes coming up including one on the Stanley Brothers starting May 2 and one on the Bill Monroe & Doc Watson duets starting July 11. My 2023 course schedule is here - please let me know if you have any questions.

My bluegrass vocal school on ArtistWorks is going strong. I’ve continued the monthly exploration of the music of Jim & Jesse with the help of a bunch of great special guests, most recently Jacob Jolliff and Frank Solivan. FYI ArtistWorks is currently running a sale on 3 month plans.

Thanks and I hope to see you all on the road!
Michael
