TAMPA, Fla. (WFLA) — A video circulating on social media appears to show former U.S. Rep. Madison Cawthorn after a crash involving a trooper in Collier County. According to a report, the trooper sustained minor injuries and was transported to an area hospital.

Aletha Shapiro posted a video on Tiktok and X and said she witnessed a black sports car strike a state trooper’s patrol vehicle.

“Suddenly the car door opens and a man in a wheelchair rolls out,” Shapiro said.

The video showed Cawthorn, the former U.S. congressman for North Carolina’s 11th congressional district, at the scene, sitting near a trooper and construction worker.

8 On Your Side reached out to the Florida Highway Patrol for information about the incident, inquiring about Cawthorn specifically. The agency did not say whether Cawthorn was involved in the crash, but sent us a release with the following narrative:

On April 15, 2024, at 16:30 hours, a FHP State Trooper vehicle (Dodge Charger) was rear-ended on Interstate 75, at mile marker 60, in a construction zone, in Collier County, by a 2021 Mercedes, driven by a 28-year-old male from Cape Coral, Florida.

The State Trooper sustained minor injuries and was transported to an area hospital.

The News-Press reported that Cawthorn purchased a $1 million home in Cape Coral in August 2022. In an Instagram post from January 2023, he said he chose to move to Florida for a number of reasons.

He recently shared a post, thanking God for sparing his life, 10 years after he was seriously injured in a car crash that left him hospitalized for months. BlueRidgeNow reported Cawthorn was riding as a passenger in the car when his friend, Brad Ledford, fell asleep at the wheel and crashed into a concrete barrier. Cawthorn, then 17, lost the use of both of his legs and suffered severe injuries, including a crushed spine.

“Thankful to have best family and friends who have gotten me through all the hard times and been there to celebrate all the great times,” the former congressman wrote in a post on April 3, 2024. “God is my protector, my life is His.”
