Beautiful, cold, distant. Full of vacuous objects and people. Astounding how much this influenced. Wes Anderson, The Godfather, the Sopranos (Pine Barrens), Taxi Driver, Mishima and even Clueless!

Marcello is a perfect allegorical tool, craving order and morality above all else, except when he doesn’t. A low key nervy weasel who wanders into numerously gloriously sexy scenarios whole being a genealogy
Putz. This is a crazy intense political thriller, except that it isn’t! I somehow expected that this would be…

Richly humanistic and nuanced portrayal of isolated broken people helping each other. Not just set in the 1970s, but FEELS like the 1970s. This is a terrifically bittersweet, touching and frequently very funny character study made for adults. Giamatti is really great here as a stodgy glass eyed grump of a history Professor. Loathed by his students, who are stuck with him over the Christmas holiday at school. This film, like Sideways shows that Giamatti and Payne really are a…

Watched at Milwaukee Film Fest with a live score by the Anvil Orchestra (feat: Robert C. Miller of Mission of Burma). The restoration is incredible, when I saw this years back it was very hard to tell what was going on.

The production design here is deeply on point, influencing… well, everything. But especially Tim Burton and Terry Gilliam. Jagged angles, intense lines, harsh shadows. Plays out like an actual nightmare.

Arguably the first horror film, and rightly regarded in history for that. Ground zero for surrealism and expressionistic filmmaking too.

Criterion Challenge 2024-Virtually Reality: pretty stunning stuff! Although one should expect nothing less from the woman who made Dick Johnson is Dead. Turning what could be a bunch of disjointed images and video into a moving tapestry of the power of emotion, connection, truth, craft,  kindness and openness is a special skill. Low key inspirational and compelling in a way that a thousand instagram reels or TikTok videos could never. This is one 10 years of clips, b-roll and outtakes…

Let me get this out of the way: Texas and California forming an alliance is so hard to believe it’s what is known as a “first page problem.” A full stop flaw in logic that keeps the reader from moving on. I honestly expect better from Garland, who I find a compelling and smart writer.

It wouldn’t happen, and moreover there is zero interest in even coming with an explanation for it (caveat: after complaining about this some, I actually…

Breathtakingly badass. An epochal defining science fiction and adventure movie. Pays off all of the laborious setup of the first one and then some. A forceful, powerful film that insists on showing and not telling. A stunning work by a filmmaker working at the top of his form. This will be a best picture nominee and it deserves it.

One of my chief complaints in the first was with Timothée Chalamet and Zendaya. I didn’t feel like either of them…
