Ukrainian folk music: Mixed by Hanna Svirska

Electro Folk

For our latest specialist mix, Kyiv-based musician Hanna Svirska takes us through an hour of Ukrainian folk music.

Folk traditions also form a central part of Svirska’s own work. Her music draws on Ukrainian folklore and mysticism to craft intricately textural, otherworldly soundscapes that fuse ethereal electronics, natural field recordings and spectral vocal arrangements. On her latest EP YANGOLAwhich takes its name from the Ukrainian word for angel – Svirska uses this exploration of mythology to carve out a pertinent narrative of renewal, hope and revival.

“This mix is a retrospective of Ukrainian folk songs with a modified and modernised arrangement and performance,” Svirska tells us. “The composition is imbued with the indomitable Ukrainian spirit and is relevant even today. This meditative mix can make you spin in a strange platonic dance around the room while feeling the infinite universe vibrations or lie with closed eyes wandering in the tunnels of yourself.”
