It took us a while, but we’re gaining speed now — DESTITUTE label is back with our third release in the form of another split. This time we’re hitting you with DST003 titled Podcast Fatigue / Cult with tracks written for us by the Polish producer and sound designer Ku Ku and Lighght, an Irish producer and meme connoisseur. After the unrelenting experimentalism of our previous splits this one comes at you with the full force of broken club music. Heavy hitting kicks, woofer burning subs and deranged grooves, food for the appetite overgrown during the pandemic.
The first track, Podcast Fatigue, sees Ku Ku going in on a trip through the weirder reaches of UK bass music — its distorted drums are weaved between low, churning basses and punctuated melodies that constantly border on becoming atonal. Throughout the entire track cursed, cut-up voices form both rhythm and melody, made out of podcasts sampled by Ku Ku — the cursed background of pandemic isolation experience of a good few of us. It’s almost like a revenge.
Meanwhile Lighght comes at you with Cult — a track made out driven grooves and guitar samples. The main sample drives you forward with a melody and harmony reminiscent of GY!BE crescendos, while mechanical grooves pulse beneath it relentlessly forcing your legs to move. Snares and assorted percussion roll constantly, falling into the groove with the cut-up guitar parts and voices that are forced to form something new. This one is pure, ecstatic pleasure of its-time-to-dance-on-the-table type bangers.
Referring to our EMPATHY open call theme, the entire proceeds from this release will be given to Chlebem i Solą — a Polish charity that is currently working way too hard to manage the migrant crisis on our border with Belarus, where migrants are held between the two borders in inhumane and appalling conditions. We wholeheartedly invite you to support this and other organizations outside of contributing through a purchase of this release and to learn more about the situation, perhaps also to spread the news around your circles.
