Today there are more than 500 🇵🇸 administrative detainees as the Israeli occupation has issued 1,595 AD orders since 2021 against former detainees who spent years in the occupation prisons, in addition to new detainees!

Administrative detention orders are issued for 6 month terms and can be renewed indefinitely, meaning 🇵🇸s can be held in prison for years with no due process- being charged, reviewing the evidence against them and refuting it in an impartial trial.

Administrative detention is arrest of individuals by a state without a specific charge or trial based on secret intelligence files or because of the absence or lack of evidence. This policy is used in particular by the Israeli occupation against 🇵🇸s!

Breaking News - Prisoner Releases

Amal Nakleh was released May 17, 2022, after 16 months of administrative detention, Israel's policy of detaining Palestinians without charge or trial.

JAN 5, 2022 - Hisham ended his hunger strike on Jan 5 after reaching an agreement with the occupation to be released on Feb 26. He will remain in hospital until that time to recover. His administrative detention orders will remain frozen. Thank you to everyone who spoke up.

Nov 27 - Loay Al Asqhar has ended his hunger strike after 49 days. He reached an agreement with occupation authorities to end his administrative detention 6 months after the current detention term ends (therefore his release will be in about 9-10 months from now). He was detained on Oct 5, 2021, and began an open hunger strike immediately. He has been imprisoned without charges before under the pretense of administrative detention. He became paralyzed after being tortured during interrogations in 2005 by Israeli occupation forces. His brother was also killed during violent attacks on prisoners in the notorious Negev desert prison on 2007.

Nov 22 - Kayed Fasfous has ended his hunger strike at 131 days after the Israeli authorities agreed to cancel his administrative detention and set a release date of Dec 14, 2021. Kayed will remain in hospital during that time to recover- the first 10 days at Barzelai Hospital and will then the transfered to a hospital  in the West Bank.

Nov 22 - Ayyad Hraimi has ended his hunger strike after Israeli occupation authorities agree to a set end date to his detention of March 4, 2022.

Nov 18 - Alaa Al Araj ended his hunger strike as the Israeli authorities agreed to end his detention, though the occupation courts may be attempting to charge and try him now after almost 6 months in prison without charges, which seems suspicious at best.

Nov 11- Miqdad Qawasmeh has come to an arrangement with occupation authorities for an end date to his detention of February 2022 and that the detention orders will not be renewed. He has ended his hunger strike as a result.

October 2021 - Shadi Abu Aker at 69 days hunger strike secured a deal with the occupation to set an end date for his detention of April 2022; Shadi ended his hunger strike as a result.

Administrative Detention & The Case of Hunger Strikers

There are among 500+ Palestinian prisoners imprisoned  without charges or trial under the pretense of administrative detention.

WHAT IS ADMINISTRATIVE DETENTION? HOW IS IT USED BY ISRAEL?

In Israeli occupation military prisons there are a total of 540+ Palestinians who are being held under the pretense of administrative detention. There are many who have been held for years without ever being charged, tried in an impartial court of law, or view and refute the supposed evidence being used to justify their imprisonment.

These prisoners often:

•        are denied access to their lawyers

•        are denied access to regular family visits

•        are placed in solitary confinement as punishment for hunger striking

Administrative detention is imprisonment without formal charge or trial, and in the case of how it is used by the Israeli occupation, often of a length of one to six months that is indefinitely renewable. Individuals imprisoned under the pretense of administrative detention by the occupation, almost exclusively Palestinians, can spend years in prison without ever being formally charged, knowing why they were arrested, or ever seeing the supposed evidence being used to justify their imprisonment. (B'selem.org, Addameer.org)

According to B’tselem, “Israel also exploits this measure to detain Palestinians for their political opinions and for engaging in non-violent political activity.” Additionally, the United Nations, various nations & multiple human rights organisations have repeatedly condemned Israel’s use of administrative detention as a grave breach of International Law.

Why do some prisoners hunger strike?

Prisoners staging hunger strikes are at risk of serious long-term health effects, as well as sudden death due to dehydration and lack of essential nutrients. Why would they risk their health this way? The answer is clear – according to Israeli human rights organization B’tselem, “the detainees have no real opportunity to mount a reasonable defense against the allegations” and have little recourse other than striking to gain their freedom under a policy the gives impunity to the Israeli occupation to imprison them indefinitely."
