Five Organizations to Support This Giving Tuesday

by Sierra Winters

Giving Tuesday is a reminder to contribute to organizations and people who are making ethical, sustainable, and charitable differences around the world. It began in 2012 and is widely known as an event that follows Black Friday, but the GivingTuesday organization encourages people to set the intention to give in some way, in some amount, every Tuesday. Give in words, give in love, give in money, give in time – whatever you choose to give, there are people who need your support. We have compiled a list of five organizations to get you started.

  1. Give Back to Our Environment: Clean Air Task Force
    1. The Clean Air Task Force (CATF) supports potential technology and policy solutions to the energy crisis. Its ultimate goal is to help “achieve zero-emissions energy, waste, agricultural, and forest management systems by 2050.”
  2. Give Back to Humanity: Doctors Without Borders
    1. Since 1971, Medecins sans Frontieres (aka Doctors Without Borders) has responded to a wide range of health crises like HIV/AIDS, Ebola, and malaria. As the COVID-19 crisis continues to rock the world, many countries still need vaccine equity and emergency treatment resources. Doctors Without Borders can help.
  3. Give Back to Our Farmers: Diaspora Co.
    1. Still shopping for all of your holiday cooking and baking? Consider sourcing from Diaspora Co., a company that goes beyond fair trade standards to pay farmers living wages for their spices. Land stewardship and transparent sourcing are primary values for Diaspora Co. and if you want to give while also getting something tasty in return, this is the ticket!
  4. Give Back to Our Youth: Teens for Food Justice
    1. Teens for Food Justice (TFFJ) brings hydroponics into NYC schools, giving students the opportunity to engage with natural systems while producing food for their communities. An organization devoted to sustainability, TFFJ is a model for projects that might soon crop up across the country.
  5. Give Back to Seniors in Your Community: Meals on Wheels
    1. What better way to give back than to actually volunteer at an in-person event? Although Meals on Wheels does have a donation option, we encourage you to donate your coat and head out to your local Meals on Wheels facility, where you can grab some hot meals to deliver to some of the nine million wise and elderly members of our country who grapple with the threat of hunger.

No matter how much time you have, where your passions lie, or how you prefer to engage with your community, there is an option for you to give back this Giving Tuesday, and every Tuesday to come. Thank you for taking part!
