How to Celebrate and Help Protect Nature this “World Nature Conservation Day”

by Giselle Chollett

If there was ever a doubt about the close relationship between humanity and nature, the COVID-19 pandemic made clear the powerful connection that we all have to, “the greater network of life that surrounds us,” as Dr. Ron Weiss, a physician, botanist, and farmer recently well said during an interview with Eco18 about his love affair with farming and medicine.

Every July 28, during World Nature Conservation Day, the world is called to remember the importance of preserving nature’s precious resources and reflect on our individual and global responsibilities to conserve water, fuels, air, minerals, soil, and wildlife. With the theme, “Forests and Livelihoods: Sustaining People and Planet,” today, people can come together and, if it hasn’t yet, start taking steps to contribute to the health of the planet.

We compiled here some ideas on how to celebrate and help protect nature this World Nature Conservation Day.

  1. Consider buying reusable and biodegradable products as much as possible
  2. Manage the use and consumption of water
  3. Reduce the use of electricity, which will not only help the environment but your pocket!
  4. Plant or donate trees
  5. Increase your consumption of organic vegetables, which are free of chemicals and pesticides. Perhaps you can start growing some of your favorite vegetables at home; there are multiple options like using hydroponic systems or joining a public green space.
  6. Start composting. This is not that easy since not every state and neighborhood has compost collection programs. Still, you can start by reaching out to your local representatives to help promote the initiative.
  7. Use rechargeable batteries. You can also dispose of electronic devices and batteries in recyclable centers, depending on your location. You can search for recycling centers that accept single-use batteries using Earth911’s Recycling Search.
  8. Learn as much as possible of the many ways you can contribute to protecting the environment.

These are some of the actions you can start taking today to observe World Nature Conservation Day. Please share with us how it goes!
