“The Empty Mirror” is the second single from Gifts from Crows forthcoming album “Stories from Slow Light”. It was inspired by a photograph taken by Helena Whitten at Poltimore House in Devon which depicts a solitary figure in front of an oval frame where a mirror used to be. Helena’s photography often has a haunted dilapidated feel to it – like beauty found in the broken and forgotten. I’m reminded personally of photography or videos of abandoned buildings and the music video nods to this idea too. The video takes a contemporary dancer and places her inside an old broken building on one side of a mirror and an “alive” version in modern-day reality – as if the two are trying to communicate through the mirror in some way. The track itself is a beautiful merger of piano, cello, violin and viola – starting out ghostly and building cinematic momentum as the track evolves.
The album ‘Stories in Slow Light’ is scheduled for release on the 25th February 2022. You can follow Gifts For Crows on Instagram to get a great visual representation of the project.
