- March for Sustainability 2024 -
UFV Office of Sustainability presents March for Sustainability 2024.
March for Sustainability returns in 2024 for its 3rd year in a row with more events than ever before!

March for Sustainability is a series of collaborative events, co-hosted by various UFV departments and groups throughout the month of March. Events address sustainability topics such as climate change, biodiversity, EDI, and gender diversity.

The initiative debuted in 2022 with five events and returned last year with 13. This year there are 20 events that encourage actions, expand networks, share knowledge, and inspire hope for a more sustainable world. March for Sustainability is intended to foster awareness and understanding to create a thriving, harmonious, and just future for all.

This year offers a mix of returning and new events. Learn all about them on the March for Sustainability webpage at ufv.ca/march-for-sustainability/.

- Sustainable Office Certification -
We held a closing ceremony in celebration of our first Sustainable Office Certification Program!

During this successful pilot project, we supported sustainability champions from 6 departments to improve the sustainability of their workspaces.
See the final results below!

The image is hyperlinked to a canva document with the same information. There is an image of one of the plaques received by a department who ranked platinum. The ranks are as follows. Platinum: Campus Planning & Facilities Management. Gold: Alumni Engagement & Advancement, Chilliwack Library. Silver: Community Health and Social Innovation, Human Resources. Bronze: Abbotsford Library.
We are so pleased that this pilot project was a success!

The next round of the Sustainable Office Certification program will begin in May! If you are interested in participating, please email the Office of Sustainability (sustainability@ufv.ca)
UFV Highlight
- Fluorescent Farewell, LED lights the way! -
A large lighting overhaul took place in January at the Abbotsford Campus Envision Athletic Centre (Building E)

An upgrade to lighting in the Envision Athletic Centre is helping to cut the building's energy use on lighting by 46%!

The lighting upgrades saw the replacement of existing fluorescent and metal halide lighting with LED (or light emitting diodide) light technology.

99% of the material from the old lights is being recycled ensuring that we are further reducing the environmental impacts of lighting at UFV.

Did you Know?

Besides being extremely energy efficient, LED lights:
  • Have a longer life span-meaning less waste and less maintenance
  • Do not contain toxic elements such as mercury.
  • Are easier to recycle
  • Do not produce a lot of heat - helping to keep buildings cool.
  • Have a high light quality. Other bulbs may need a warm-up period when switched on and may begin to flicker over time, but LEDs produce consistent light over their lifetime.
  • Are dimmable, providing flexibility in controlling light output and also contributing to energy savings when full brightness is not required.

Sustainability Tip of the Month
- Watt's up with E-Waste? -
E-waste is any electrical or electronic equipment that's been discarded.

This includes working and broken items that are thrown in the garbage or donated to thrift stores. Often, if the item goes unsold in the store, it will be thrown away.
Did you know? Canada's e-waste has tripled within the last 20 years! E-waste produced in Canada from 2001-2020 is equivalent to 110 CN Towers.
