Château d'Yquem 2021
& Other Vintages
Yquem retains its status as the finest sweet wine in the world, apparently effortlessly, although closer examination reveals the influences of terroir, vineyard management and winemaking. The soils are a complex mix of limestone and clay on slopes that are steep by Bordeaux standards. This exposes the vines to drying winds which aid the development of noble rot. A team of up to 200 pickers is employed in harvesting, making up to ten passes through the vines with yields as low as 10 hectoliters per hectare.
The 2021 is a very rich style of Yquem which is a candidate for lengthy ageing. Yields were low even by the standards of the property, below 9 hl/ha. The residual sugar is 148 grams per liter. There is a perfect balance between fruit, sugar, alcohol and acid with an exceptionally long finish.

TASTING NOTE
The 2021 d'Yquem exhibits a complex bouquet of rose, exotic fruits and mandarin orange mingled with spring flowers, rose and crème brûlée, followed by a medium to full-bodied, ample and seamless palate that's suave and layered, with a deep core and a long finish that's lent definition by delicate bitterness that offsets the 148 grams per liter residual sugar. This blend of 65% Sémillon and 35% Sauvignon Blanc was matured, as usual, in all new barrels, but the new oak is perfectly integrated and barely noticeable.
