Chambolle-Musigny and Volnay are two of the outstanding red wine producing villages in the Cote d’Or, located in the Cote de Nuits and the Cote de Beaune respectively. Similarities have been identified between the two, both villages combining elegance and delicacy with intensity of flavour. As usual in Burgundy it is worth looking closely at the combination of site, producer and vintage to get an understanding of what lies behind the label.

Chambolle-Musigny derives much of its prestige from being home to two Grand Crus, Musigny and Bonnes Mares as well as an outstanding Premier Cru, Les Amoureuses, which would be a prime candidate for promotion to Grand Cru status, were such a re-rating ever to be considered. There are many other Premier Crus to choose from, each with their own character, and the standard of winemaking here is generally high. This is a village where climate change is seen as a particular threat to the traditional style but vignerons are acutely aware of the change in growing conditions and have taken appropriate measures in terms of pruning, canopy management and attention to harvesting dates.

Volnay has no Grand Crus seems unlikely to acquire any in the near future. The characteristics of the leading Premier Crus are well documented and understood and most vineyard owners seem very happy with the current state of affairs. If there is a candidate for the pre-eminent vineyard it would probably be Caillerets, of which it is said ‘If you don’t have vines in Caillerets you don’t know what Volnay is.’ Vineyards in the northern part of the village, bordering on Pommard, tend to show a firmer and more tannic style.
