Women empowerment in the wine industry has gained momentum in recent years, with an increasing number of female wine producers making their mark in the field. These women are breaking barriers and challenging traditional norms within the industry, demonstrating their expertise and passion for winemaking.

Godme was established in 1930 by Michele and Bertrand Godme. Sabine and her brother Hugues divided the 11 hectare estate in equal parts. Today Sabine Godme and her husband Jean Marie Guillaume represent the 4th generation. The estate is located in the heart of Montagne de Reims, specifically in the Grand Cru village of Verzenay. All the viticulture here is sustainable.

Jae Chu Cramette, who is the winemaker at Château Grillet in the Rhone valley, where she has taken on the exciting assignment of leading this legendary white Rhone. Château-Grillet is a legendary terroir. For a young female Korean enologist to have a hand in its destiny is extraordinary. Jae has risen to the occasion admirably after learning winemaking skills at Domaine Eugenie in Vosne Romanee, also under the Artemis group.

Caroline Morey is the eldest daughter of the famed Jean-Marc Morey. In 2014, after her father’s retirement, she took a portion of the family’s vineyards to start her own domaine. Today she shares a winery in Chassagne-Montrachet with her husband, Pierre-Yves Colin, where they are making elite red and white Burgundy that stand at the apex of what is possible in the legendary region.

Caroline Frey manages three significant French wine estates that have been acquired by her family; as well as Château La Lagune in Bordeaux, there is Domaines Paul Jaboulet in the Rhône and Château Corton C (formerly Corton Andre) in Burgundy – controlling every aspect of viticulture and winemaking. She is clearly driven to succeed and while the estates are likely financially successful, she seems to be more motivated by a passion to express, protect and develop the land of which she has become custodian, through her wines.

Although Angelo Gaja shows now eagerness to step aside from his leading role in the Gaja family wine business, day to day control has increasingly passed to son Giovanni and daughters Gaia and Rosanna. Together they oversee activities at four wineries, with an increasing emphasis on long-term sustainability in a time of climate change.

She knows this place. She lives it. She and her husband Ben have raised their children here. Family roots are as established as the vines that put the region on the map. 2024 marks Helen’s twenty first year at Ata Rangi.
