Domaine de l'Arlot

Burgundy En-Primeur 2022

In 1987 AXA Millésimes bought Domaine Jules Belin in Premeaux at the instigation of Jean-Pierre de Smet. Together they set up a management company to run the business as a 50:50 partnership, until AXA took full control on Jean-Pierre’s retirement in 2006. The original property consisted of three monopoles, Clos du Chapeau in Comblanchien, Clos de l’Arlot where the domaine is based and Clos des Forêts St-Georges. In 1991 they were able to buy a small slice of Romanée St-Vivant and the following year some Vosne-Romanée Les Suchots, bringing the domaine up to 14 hectares in all.

Olivier Leriche joined the business as a trainee in 1998, was hired full time and took over from Jean-Pierre de Smet in 2006, maintaining the same style of wine. He left just before the harvest in 2011, with just a one-week handover period to the new régisseur, Jacques Devauges. Two years later the latter handed over to Géraldine Godot.
Géraldine Godot began picking on 26th August and finished on 31st, apart from the Hautes Côtes held back until 10th September. The average yield was 38.5 hl/ha in both colours, whereas 25 hl/ha would be a 10-year average. Most wines register 13.5% excepting the Hautes Côtes de Nuits, with an ideal acid balance. The big surprise though, for me at any rate, was that Géraldine has used no whole bunch vinification at all in 2022. Yet the wines remain in the same fine-boned style. Intriguing! Perhaps if there is a difference the wines are less floral and are slightly more backward than they would have been otherwise.

VILLAGE

Domaine de L'Arlot Cote de Nuits-Villages Clos du Chapeau 2022
Red | JM 89

Mid crimson colour. The bouquet shows a little more fruit ripeness than Le Mont. Quite firm on the palate, with a more rigid structure, a fair volume of fruit, but on the discreet side today.

$290 / bottle (750ml)
(ETA Mar 2025)

PREMIER CRU

Domaine de l’Arlot Nuits-St-Georges 1er Cru Clos de l’Arlot Blanc Monopole 2022
White | JM 89-92

This cuvée now covers all the plots, as La Gerbotte is included in Arlot, given that the vines are now 30 year old after all. Racked to tank but neither fined nor filtered yet. 25% new wood just features lightly on the nose, rather more evident on the palate. There is adequate concentration of white fruit, with a saline apple finish.

Domaine de l’Arlot Nuits-St-Georges 1er Cru Clos de l’Arlot Monopole 2022
Red | JM 91-93

A mid crimson colour, slightly deeper than Mont des Oiseaux. Rather more pure red fruit on the bouquet. Fine tension, medium plus bodied, more strawberry than raspberry, with an even fruit through to the finish, where the fine tannins and light acidity are in balance.

(ETA Mar 2025)
Domaine de l’Arlot Nuits-St-Georges 1er Cru Clos des Forêts St-Georges Monopole 2022
Red | JM 92-93

A fuller purple than either Arlot cuvée, which is as normal. The bouquet holds the promise of clean fruit at optimum ripeness, but does not deliver detail at this point. Plenty of energy here, some slightly firmer tannins, correct acidity, and then the more perfumed red berry fruit, slightly more raspberry here, returns at the back.

(ETA Mar 2025)
Domaine de l’Arlot Vosne-Romanée 1er Cru Les Suchots 2022
Red | JM 92-95

A crimson to purple colour. The bouquet has refinement along with a sense of structure. The bouquet builds steadily to show a high-class red berry fruit, alpine strawberries. Very complete across the palate with an excellent tensile strength, and a very nicely constructed finish. Nothing too soft here. The strawberries return in full force after the refined tannins.

ORDER NOW
The domaine is based on two monopole vineyards in Nuits-Saint-Georges: Clos des Forets and Clos de L’Arlot and a third in the Cote de Nuits Villages, Clos de Chapeau. Geraldine Godot has been in charge of winemaking since 2013 and has not been afraid to deviate from her predecessors policy when it comes to the inclusion of whole bunches in the fermentations. The wines tend to be pale in colour and quite reticent when young but are very capable of putting on weight and complexity with age.
