DOMAINE MICHEL NIELLON

Burgundy En-Primeur 2022

There is a changing of the guard in process at Domaine Michel Niellon. Michel passed away in 2020 and his son-in-law Michel Coutoux, who has been at the domaine since 1990, is easing out of the day-to-day operations. Stepping up to play a more active role are his daughter Lucie and her cousin Matthieu Bresson, a graduate of Beaune’s Lycée Viticole. There are just over seven hectares of vineyards, some of which are still out of action due to replanting.

Similar to elsewhere in the Cote de Beaune, Chassagne-Montrachet saw near drought conditions interspersed with heavy rainfall. Harvest took place from 25th to 30th of August. The grapes in 2022 were of high quality, not a lot of sorting needed, fermentations were fast and easy. A change of barrel supplier in 2022 has brought a more supple quality to the wines, with up to 30% new oak used for the Premier Crus.

BOURGOGNE

DOMAINE MICHEL NIELLON
Bourgogne Blanc 2022

White

Pale lemon colour. A very sulphur reductive nose. Some barrel, some tank. Good flesh while the reduction adds a toasty note. I assume this will all calm down but it probably means keeping this a little longer before opening the bottle. Well balanced acidity. Tasted by Jasper Morris, Inside Burgundy.

VILLAGE

DOMAINE MICHEL NIELLON
Chassagne-Montrachet 2022

White | JM 90

A clear pale lemon. A pretty bouquet, more floral, without the sulphur reduction of the Bourgogne Blanc. Clean and even quite chiselled, pure white fruit, just a little heat behind, and some barrel toast. However, the core fruit is very attractive and has some muscle. Fair tension behind. Tasted by Jasper Morris, Inside Burgundy.

PREMIER CRU

DOMAINE MICHEL NIELLON
Chassagne-Montrachet 1er Cru Clos Saint-Jean 2022

White | JM 91

Fresh clear pale colour. The nose has less character than my favourites in the line-up. Takes a little time, then more emerges. There is something of a steely backbone, this is nicely made but I pine for pinot in this vineyard. Well balanced. Tasted by Jasper Morris, Inside Burgundy.

DOMAINE MICHEL NIELLON
Chassagne-Montrachet 1er Cru Clos de la Maltroie 2022

White | JM 91

An attractive mid lemon. Slightly yellower fruit. Good acidity with a leaner style of fruit. Maltroie rarely shines in its youth, and this is again in the more austere style. Tasted by Jasper Morris, Inside Burgundy.
