Hello everybody,

I’m writing from sunny NYC where I’m gearing up for my monthly show at the Rockwood Music Hall tomorrow night. I recently had a fun trip to my southern homeland where I played the fabulous Savannah Music Festival with Bruce Molsky & Tony Trischka, got in some family time in Atlanta, and made my first Florida appearance in quite a while at the EMS Springfest with the stout crew pictured below (Tony, Luke Bulla, Mike Bub). I met some great folks there including Ralph Stanley II with whom I got to sing Rank Strangers and a few other Stanley classics - what a thrill!

The Rockwood show tomorrow will be my first solo set in a minute (though I’m expecting some sitting-in). Practically speaking, this should help me warm up for the Imagine Zero fest coming up on May 13 in Brandon, VT. Topically speaking, I’ve decided to make the night a celebration of both Doc Watson and Dolly Parton, on the occasion of Doc’s centennial. It’ll also mark the imminent release of the tribute album I Am A Pilgrim: Doc at 100, on which I back up Dolly on The Last Thing On My Mind, a song that Doc and Dolly each recorded in the 1960s, and performed together to heartbreaking effect at MerleFest in 2001. Also, I love singing Dolly Parton songs and this has given me an excuse to add a few new ones to my repertoire. I hope you’ll join me if you’re in the area! (Tickets).

I’ll be back in NYC on April 23 to host a student recital and also an open bluegrass jam session at Jalopy Theatre, along with bassist Erik Alvar. Bring your instruments and your Bill Monroe/Stanley Brothers/Flatt & Scruggs/Jimmy Martin songs! Jam: 6:30-8:30pm, $5 suggested donation.

I’ll be out and about quite a bit this Summer, doing festivals with Jacob Jolliff in BC, NL, UK, and VT. I’m also accompanying Tony Trischka for Earl Scruggs tribute project called Earl Jam. He’s got an album in the works with a stellar list of special guests (and I play on three tracks) and we’re touring around including New England shows this May and more to come including the Earl Scruggs Fest in NC this September. Here we are playing the "And Ole Opry" back in November with Stuart Duncan, Mike Bub and Dominick Leslie, the same day we laid down some tracks for the record.
