Hello everybody, and happy holidays!

I’m finishing out the year with a few weeks in NYC which will include some recording with Jacob Jolliff (stay tuned for more on that project!) and getting my new Brooklyn studio set up for teaching in-person (finally - it’s been a long time coming!). It feels great to once again have a spot in the city and I look forward to being back and forth between there and my home in the Berkshires on a regular basis.
This Thursday, Dec. 7 I’ll be celebrating the 17th anniversary of my residency at Rockwood Music Hall. I’ll be back on Stage 1 where I played over 650 shows between Dec 2006 and March 2020. The larger Stage 2, where I’ve been doing monthly shows since 2021 has just closed its doors so we’re getting back to basics. No cover, an informal feel, and some wonderful special guests sitting in throughout the evening. Who knows what will happen! I don’t!

Thanks go out to all of you who supported the Preserve Rockwood campaign over the summer - I understand that’s what is allowing the venue to continue on with Stage 1. I will continue my monthly shows in a mostly solo format (see calendar below). If you are in NYC I hope you will join me tomorrow 9-10:45pm, $15 suggested.
I’m in the midst of Lonesome Fridays, where I’m sharing a song video every week until the end of the year. The idea is that together they form a 10 song solo set. Follow my social media accounts for the weekly rollout, and I’m also adding them to a YouTube playlist so you can string them all together. In each post I’ll talk some about the songs, the instruments I’m playing, and events I’m gearing up for. I did the same thing last year, so you can check out the Lonesome Fridays 2022 playlist as well. Here’s the kick-off to this year’s series:
Here is I'm Lost And I'll Never Find The Way, a Stanley Brothers burner from 1956. I've loved this song forever but it took me 'till now to memorize the words. It's only two verses, don't ask why it took me so long!
In 2024 I’ll be doing a bunch of tour dates with Tony Trishcka supporting his new album which is due out in March. It’s a tribute to Earl Scruggs, marking Earl’s centennial, and features a who’s who of different special guests on each track. I’m on a few songs, as part of a killer band with Stuart Duncan on fiddle, Mike Bub on bass, and Dominick Leslie on mandolin. Our touring ensemble is me, Tony, Jared Engel on bass and a variety of very fine fiddlers including Casey Driessen, Brittany Haas, and others. Check the calendar below for some of the dates – there will be more added. Hopefully we're coming to your area!
Here's some audience video from Tony Trischka's Earl Jam show this past summer at Joe's Pub in NYC featuring Brittany Haas, Jacob Jolliff, and Erik Alvar. I recommend amusing yourself with the auto-generated closed captioning, especially if you are familiar with this iconic John Hartford song.
Looking ahead to next summer, I’m thrilled to say I’ll be returning to teach at Bryan Sutton’s Blue Ridge Guitar Camp May 29-June 2, in Brevard, NC. This is a fantastic event for players of all levels who are interested in bluegrass guitar style and flatpicking. It’s a great list of instructors - Chris Eldridge, Courtney Hartman, Jake Workman, and Charlotte Carrivick plus Bryan. The application period is open now through Jan. 1. Don’t worry – it’s not a scary application, just a way for Bryan to groups of students together who are at similar levels, which makes for a better learning experience for all. There will be a big public concert on June 1 featuring the instructors plus other artists. Details TBA, and it’ll be worth traveling for.

For those of you interested in instruction, I maintain a separate classes & lessons email newsletter where I make announcements about those sorts of things before I post them on social media or here in this music newsletter. Let me know if you would like to be added to that list so you’ll be in the know. I will soon be releasing my 2024 schedule of online classes. I'll also be announcing the details of my reopening for in-person instruction in NYC, and will be adding special topic classes throughout the year like the one I am currently teaching on Doc Watson's playing on the Will The Circle Be Unbroken album.

I hope you are all well, and thanks for all you do to support live music!

Michael
