Greetings everyone,

I’m on the road a good bit this year with Tony Trishcka’s Earl Jam, supporting his Scruggs tribute album of the same name which is due out in May or June. We did two Southern swings in January with the amazing Casey Driessen on fiddle (Sparrow Quartet etc) and Jared Engel on bass which were tons of fun. In between was Tony’s epic 75th birthday bash in NYC featuring special guests Steve Martin, Bela Fleck, Noam Pikelny, Ed Helms, Michael Cleveland, Bruce Molsky, Joyce Carol Oates and more. What a great celebration of Tony and his music! Thanks to all who came out to all of these shows - it was great to see friends, family, and students out and about. There are a bunch of dates in the works so I hope to see more of you.

Following a Centennial celebration at the Earl Scruggs Center in Shelby, NC, Earl Jam made a pilgrimage to Scruggs' childhood home in nearby Flint Hill. We played Reuben on this very porch where Earl developed the three-finger banjo style that revolutionized the instrument and bluegrass music. Hallowed ground! What a thrill! Video is forthcoming but here’s a photo for proof.

As you may know, I had the honor of getting to play on two tracks for I Am A Pilgrim: Doc Watson at 100, a beautiful and wide-ranging tribute album deftly produced by Matthew Stevens. One of those, The Last Thing On My Mind, sung by Dolly Parton, was up for a Grammy this past weekend for Best Solo Country Vocal. The award ended up going to Chris Stapleton (for White Horse) but there’s no question Dolly sang a version for the ages here. I wasn’t in the studio with her, but when I heard her performance over my guitar backing I almost fainted. She could have phoned this one in but no way - Dolly really brought it. It’s SO FREAKING GOOD!

The other track I played on was backing up Steve Earle on Make Me A Pallet On Your Floor. Steve also delivered a great performance, and was a hoot to be with in the studio. We nerded out over vintage guitars and shared Doc stories. Also, I’ve never heard such colorful profanity coming in through my studio headphones as on that day. There were several takes I almost ruined for laughing. Everyone involved in the project knocked it out of the park. It’s a really interesting and enjoyable record featuring many amazing artists and many Grammy-worthy performances - I hope you give it a listen!

Jacob Jolliff and I are working on edits for the duo album we tracked just before New Years – a tribute to the music of Jim & Jesse and the Virginia Boys. We don’t have a release date yet but I look forward to yelling it far and wide when we do. It was really fun recording to make and I look forward to highlighting some J&J music that may be a little under the radar but is super cool. Jacob and I are performing next month at the Back Porch Festival in Northampton, MA on March 17, and have other tour plans brewing that I'll be excited to tell you about soon.
Tonight I continue my monthly NYC residency at the Rockwood Music Hall. The venue recently closed the larger Stage 2 so I’m back on Stage 1 like old times and doing (mostly) solo sets. I’ve enjoyed the heck out of the last two shows there in the little room and I hope you’ll join me tonight at 9pm if you’re in the area. I’ll be doing a bunch of Doc Watson and Dolly Parton material to continue honoring Doc’s centennial and Dolly’s general awesomeness. Come early for Lovesick Duo at 8pm, who are on tour from Italy. On the teaching front, I've got two Zoom classes coming up. The first is Intro to Bluegrass Mandolin, which meets for six Tuesday nights starting February 27. Next up is a deep dive into the guitar style of Tony Rice, focusing on his seminal 1983 (mostly) solo album Church Street Blues. That one meets for five Sunday afternoons starting April. 7. Please message me if you would like to reserve a spot or if you are wondering if a class is right for you. I expect both of these to fill up so don't delay!
And finally, here's some bootleg audio that a fan recently shared of the entire Thile/Daves main stage set at Grey Fox 2011. This is a show that Chris and I fondly remember and wanted to share. It's a wild romp. Enjoy!
