May Newsletter: Upcoming Shows, Festivals, and Film Scores

Greetings, folks

I’m writing from home in the lovely Berkshires, which is not where I expected to be today! Unfortunately this weekend’s Northeast run with Tony Trischka’s Earl Jam has been postponed due to a Covid diagnosis. Apologies to those of you who were planning to come out in Galway, Boston, Amherst, and Bryn Athyn! No word yet on when these shows will be rescheduled but please stay tuned. I will definitely be back out with Tony later this month - The Kate in Old Saybrook, CT on 5/26, Joe’s Pub in NYC on 5/27, and Godfrey Daniels in Bethlehem, PA on 5/28 and I hope to see some of you there.

I’ll be in NYC this Wednesday, May 10 for my monthly residency at the Rockwood Music Hall. It’s a solo set I’m calling Michael Daves’ Georgia Crawl, featuring music associated with my hometown of Atlanta. I’ll be interpreting songs from the 1920s Georgia fiddle bands, 1930s Atlanta blues (esp. Blind Willie McTell), Bill Monroe’s early recordings (made in Atlanta, 1940!), various friends and mentors (1970s on), 90s art-rock pioneers and more, all with a grassy touch (sorry, no Outkast – I’m not worthy!). Next Saturday, May 13 I’ll be in Brandon, VT for the inaugural Imagine Zero Festival, which aspires to be a zero-waste and zero- carbon emissions event. Dawes headlines. It should be a great day of music for a great cause, in a beautiful place. Hop on the train or the Appalachian Trail and take it in!

Looking ahead to May 20 I’ll be in Bentonville, AR for FreshGrass. I’ve been commissioned to write and perform a live score to a silent film as part of the festival’s FreshScores program. I’ve chosen the 1921 classic Manhatta, regarded as the first avant-garde film. Its striking imagery depicts a typical day in the life of lower Manhattan, framed by Walt Whitman poetry. I’m writing music on my beautiful Gibson banjo-guitar of the same vintage and will be accompanied by Erik Alvar on upright bass.
