Greetings!
It’s been a busy summer of gigs - my busiest ever – and now we’re starting to head down the homestretch.  As a performer I’ve never been on the touring model but it’s nice to get out and about, see some new places, meet some new folks, and jam with old friends. I’ve been overseas twice and to BC, Canada with Jacob Jolliff (as well as in Kansas, Vermont, and NYC). I got to experience some epic hangs with cohorts at Chris Thile’s AcoustiCamp (held in a Gatsby mansion on Long Island), Green Mountain Bluegrass Festival (total lovefest - don’t miss it next year), Mountain Stage (news flash: Kathy Mattea is super cool) and ScruggsFest in NC (where I tried my best to keep up with Michael Cleveland!).

When Jacob Jolliff and I were in Lawrence, KS a few weeks ago for the Kaw River Roots Festival we got warmed up along the hot, buggy river banks. We've been working up a bunch of Jim & Jesse material that we hope to record this winter. Here's Are You Missing Me, the first J&J hit for Capitol Records back in 1952, written by the Louvin Brothers. Enjoy!

Coming up this month is a clump of trio shows with Bruce Molsky and Tony Trischka. We play this Saturday, 9/10 in Poughkeepsie, NY for the Hudson Valley Bluegrass Association, next Saturday 9/17 in Silver Lake, NY at Bluegrass in Heaven, and Sunday 9/18 in Portland, ME for SeaGrass Music Festival. And I’m thrilled to announce that we’ve just been added to the FreshGrass lineup at Mass MoCA in North Adams, MA (my new neighborhood!) on Saturday, 9/23 (FYI at FreshGrass I'll also be performing my original score to the 1921 silent film Manhatta, for FreshScores on 9/24)

On this Wednesday, September 13 my monthly NYC residency at Rockwood Music Hall continues with a duo set with mandolin great, Andy Statman. Get tickets here
This Sunday evening, 9/10 I'll be hosting an open bluegrass jam at the Jalopy Theatre in Brooklyn, NY. All are welcome to come pick and sing. It'll be a circle-style jam (no mic) and Erik Alvar will be holding things down on bass. There's a $5 suggested donation. Photo by Zach Williams.
There's a lot happening as usual over on my online school of bluegrass vocals with ArtistWorks. Each month I produce a welcome video exploring some special topic. I've just started a new series on Doc Watson songs to commemorate his centennial this year. Chris "Critter" Eldridge helped me kick things off last month with Doc's version of the Delmore Brothers song Blue Railroad Train. And last weekend at ScruggsFest I sat down with Pete Wernick aka Dr. Banjo (of Hot Rize), who shared some great stories and insights on Doc and his music and helped me break down Deep River Blues. Stay tuned for more special guests and Doc songs to come!
This coming Tuesday, 9/13 I'll be back to teaching group classes over Zoom. This next one is a six-week course called Singing Through the History of Bluegrass Music. It's a survey of the tradition that follows its development chronologically from the 1930s to present. We'll learn songs that are emblematic of each era and discuss the historical and cultural factors that shaped the music. We'll have two special guests joining us live to talk about their contributions to and experiences with the genre. Meets from 7:45-9:15pm, class limit 10, fee $240. No singing experience required, though I will provide a range of options each week so that beginners and more experienced singers alike can fine an appropriate level of challenge. Please reach out if you'd like to reserve a spot or if you have any questions.

Thanks for all you do to support live music, especially independent venues like the Rockwood and Jalopy, homegrown festivals like SeaGrass, and the bands/artists you love. We couldn’t do what we do without you! Have a great rest of your summer and stay in touch.

-Michael
