CELEBRATE THE WINS, FIGHT FOR MORE
Over the past several weeks, the world has seen some extraordinary climate wins and we wanted to make sure you know about them!

WHAT HAPPENED: In a world-first decision, a Dutch court ordered Shell Oil to reduce its greenhouse gas emissions by 45% from 2019 levels by 2030. In its ruling, the court declared Shell's current climate policies "largely amount to rather intangible, undefined, and nonbinding plans for the long term."

WHY IT MATTERS: This ruling not only marked the first time a court has decided a private company must take mandated climate action, it also specifically made clear that Shell is responsible for Scope 3 emissions - the CO2 emissions related to the use of their products, like driving a car. While this decision only applies in the Netherlands, the reverberations may be felt around the world, empowering similar lawsuits and forcing fossil fuel companies to take climate action.

WHAT HAPPENED: Activist investors have secured 3 seats on Exxon's powerful board. Growing dissatisfaction with Exxon's refusal to take climate action and its continued investments in fossil fuels despite dwindling profits, drove the action.

WHY IT MATTERS: These board members have been outspoken critics of Exxon's continued lack of action in the face of the climate emergency and are expected to push the fossil fuel company's investments away from oil and gas and toward clean energy.

WHAT HAPPENED: Directly rebuking Chevron's management, 61% of shareholders voted in favor of a proposal to cut Scope 3 emissions.

WHY IT MATTERS: In yet another stunning turn of events, the oil company's shareholders not only demanded that the company reduce its direct emissions, but also those produced by its customers burning oil and gas!

AND THERE'S MORE!
In Australia, while a group of 8 teenagers lost their bid to stop a coal mine expansion, their lawsuit led the court to rule that the government has a duty to prevent future climate harm, possibly changing the course for future projects. Maine just became the first state in the US to pass a law forcing the state pension fund and state treasury to divest from fossil fuels. And just days ago, the Keystone XL pipeline was OFFICIALLY TERMINATED.

Friends, this is monumental stuff and it's happening because people like you - like everyone in this community - who are speaking up and demanding climate action now. We may have a long road ahead of us, but it's crucial to recognize that our activism matters now and will reverberate for generations to come. Today, we celebrate these victories. Tomorrow, we fight for more.
