Our Editor's Take

Reality Winner got arrested in her Georgia home on June 3, 2017. WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange called on the public to defend her. But who was this young and mysterious whistleblower? This is Reality—The Reality Winner Podcast discusses the details of this perplexing national news story.

Distinguished for her service, Winner received the Air Force Commendation Medal. Her work contributed to hundreds of enemy captures. It also helped authorities identify high-value targets. Yet five years into her service, she became the main suspect in a federal investigation. The Department of Justice labeled Winner a threat to national security.

An intelligence report determined that Russian hackers were interfering with voter registration polls. It was unclear whether the hackers were successful. Winner hid the report in her pantyhose and smuggled it out of the Fort Gordon army base. She emailed information from the National Security Agency (NSA) to The Intercept. This famed media outlet was imperative in promoting the story and revealing Winner's role in the leak. She had previously taken an oath to keep information classified. But as she “pledged service to the American people,” she felt obliged to tell them the truth.
