Of all the activities we host at the NOOK, our annual QUILT RACE is the highlight that everyone buzzes about all year long. Last year we had such a blast, y’all wouldn’t let me end the Zoom call until I promised we’d do it again this year lol so here we are! We’ve cooked up a brand new prompt and we are READY FOR YOUUUUU

WHAT IS QUILT RACE?

You log in, get your prompt, and then have 60 minutes (!!!) to crank out quilt top. I’ll play a specially-curated QUILT RACE playlist to keep you motivated. At the end of the hour, we’ll debrief about what QUILT RACE unlocked for you and celebrate these beautiful new quilt bbs

WHY QUILT RACE?

Besides the fact that it’s JUST PLAIN FUN, our QUILT RACE is designed to unlock your creative potential. Working under a time crunch has sparked some of my best ideas, and I hope it does the same for you! After the race, you’re encouraged to use your piece as a β€œsketch” for a future quilt.

Raised in rural North Carolina and now living in Brooklyn, New York, Zak is a community-taught artist whose work draws on Southern textile traditions and repurposed fabrics. He practices an approach to design that is intuitive and improvisational. He is especially drawn to preserving the stories of quilts and specializes in memory quilts and burial quilts. His work has been featured in on the red carpet of the Met Gala, the Metropolitan Museum of Art, as well as various magazines, websites, and galleries. His QUILTY NOOK community connects and inspires quilters and makers all over the world.

Do I need to prepare anything or buy special materials in advance?

No special preparations are needed before the workshop. Bring a good idea or two (which you likely already possess!) and we'll explore how to use what you have to get started immediately.

I'm not very artistic. I doubt I can create anything good.

I hear you, and I want to reassure you that this workshop is designed with beginners in mind! It's all about exploring creativity in a fun, supportive environment. There's no need for prior experience, and I'll be there to guide you every step of the way.

I'm pretty shy and not comfortable being on camera or speaking up in groups.

I want everyone to feel comfortable, so being on camera is entirely optional. You're welcome to participate in whatever way feels best for you. It's all about enjoying the process and learning something new in a way that suits you.

What if I can't attend the live session?

I completely understand that technology can be a bit daunting. That's why I'll provide clear, easy-to-follow instructions for joining the workshop. And if any issues come up, I'll be here to help you out. Ensuring you have a smooth experience is my top priority.
