MIC CHECK: Ride Cycles - Riding, Training, and Reaching Goals at all Stages of Life

Welcome to "Mic Check," a special episode of Local Legends where we delve deep into the lives and stories of extraordinary individuals. In this edition, I'm stoked to welcome back three phenomenal women who graced our podcast before: Makenna Kellerman, Joy McCulloch, and Tammy Tabeek.

Join us for a fun discussion touching on life's various stages, training, and performance. Each of these women boasts an impressive racing and performance background, and they'll share their personal journeys navigating womanhood, education, careers, relationships, and the evolution of their cycling pursuits.

Securing an hour of their time was no small feat; it was a juggling act of schedules and commitments. We had very little time to prepare for this gathering, and they didn't get much time to reflect on the questions which made their candid answers a genuine slice of life.

As we explore their experiences and insights, I'll also pose some questions for you, the listener, to ponder: What do you do to keep yourself healthy? How have you seen things shift over the last five years, ten years, or even twenty years (if you're over 40)? What excites you about your future, and what are you curious about?

After the episode, I will offer coaching tips on staying young, fit and fierce at any age.

(Gentlemen - there will be an episode dedicated to you all. We will earmark Ep. 50 for a discussion with men through different stages of life. )

Enjoy!

Dr. Jason Richardson - BMX World Champion & Sports Psychologist (Ep. 39)

Dr. Jason Richardson - BMX World Champion & Sports Psychologist (Ep. 39)

UNLEASHING PERFORMANCE
I'd like to introduce Dr. Jason Richardson - a former professional BMX rider now sharing his love for riding and performance as a Sports Psychologist and Mental Skills and Executive Coach. Jason got into a racing as the little brother tagging along as his brother excelled at the sport. Jason got his own chance to race and that is when things changed and his trajectory in riding and life transformed.
In Episode 39, we dive into the journey of Dr. Jason Richardson, tracing his path from the adrenaline-fueled world of BMX racing becoming a Pro BMX World Champion and a PanAm Games Gold Medalist. We go through his journey riding to bike parks, 'practicing', getting chances and losing them and learning about himself and what he is made of.
It was also fun to get some of his insights as a Sports Psychologist discussing breath work, confidence and the power of being free.

Jason lives in Carlsbad with his wife and two sons. You can learn more about Jason here and follow him on Instagram @realdrjrich

Dave & Christina Turner - Mountain Bike Trailblazers (Ep. 34)

Dave & Christina Turner - Mountain Bike Trailblazers (Ep. 34)

Local Legends - Episode 34 with Dave and Christina Turner - Mountain Bike Trailblazers

Get ready for a mountain bike history lesson. I met Christina the first time I ever raced Downieville back in 2011. I knew of her and it took a race, over 600 miles from our homes, for us to have our first interaction. After that day, there would be many races we would line up next to each other, each time our interaction was professional and brief and each time she played to win. She had grit, speed, and skills. That was all I knew of Christina. Dave was always equally professional and 'to the point' and meant business. I knew he was the brains and muscles behind Turner Bikes but didn't know much more than that. I was so glad to get these two mountain bike trailblazers on the Local Legends podcast to tell their story of their athletic career, the people they have raced with, the places they have gone and the shit they have accomplished! We discuss their racing career but what doesn't get noted in this conversation is they have EACH raced in hundreds of races, according to USA Cycling and that only dates back to 2001, including road, cyclocross, downhill, enduro, and cross country mountain bike. And of those, they have podium a high percentage including Christina winning the 2015 & 2016 Enduro Nationals and 2015 Cyclocross Nationals. Before USAC documentation, she had been racing Downieville and Great Flume Trail in Lake Tahoe, setting the course record in 1993. This was the time when mountain biking was coming of age. In this conversation, we discuss: 1. Riding and Racing Experiences - share highlights from local, regional, and national races and the various disciplines as well as their shared love for skiing and Christina's experience with extreme skiing. 2. Turner Bike and Its Evolution - Why and how it all began, and how the brand has evolved over the years and what sets their brand apart and the stories behind creating the first downhill bike. 3. The Turner Journey: Business and Pleasure - how the two of you met, love for riding and how they balance life with business ventures.Dave and Christina currently reside in Murrieta, CA and continue to race gravel and mountain locally and regionally. Local Legends - Episode 33 with Doug Pomeranz, Road racing through the years

In this episode of the podcast (Episode 33), I had the pleasure of sitting down with Doug Pomeranz, a seasoned road rider and racer with over 30 years of experience under his belt. San Diego has become Doug's home due to his deep passion for cycling. With numerous national champion titles to his name, he continues to compete at the elite Cat 1 level, showcasing his dedication and love for the sport. What truly stood out to me in this interview was Doug's unwavering commitment to evolving and pushing his limits, all fueled by his pure love for riding bikes.

Chris Powell - Pro BMX & 4X (Ep. 32 )

Local Legends - Episode 32 with Chris Powell

In Episode 32 of the Local Legends Podcast, I have a captivating conversation with Chris Powell, widely known as Good Flow. Chris's journey into the world of BMX began at a young age, igniting a passion that would lead him to remarkable achievements. From racing at the pinnacle of the sport to transitioning into the 4-Cross (or 4X), Chris's tenacity and enthusiasm are truly inspiring.

In our discussion, Chris delves into the intricacies of his riding and racing journey, recounting his experiences in both BMX and 4X. With a touch of poetic insight, he reflects on the art of skill and flow, highlighting the precision required to compete at the highest level.

But Chris's story doesn't end there. We explore his genuine love for bicycles, including his involvement in assembling bikes for athletes like Olympians Mike Day and Jill Kintner, both of whom are celebrated Redbull athletes.

Balancing his passion for cycling with a demanding family life and a full-time role as the in-house counsel at the local Better Buzz coffee shop, Chris offers how is able to train and managing time and commitments. We also dive into his recent win as the overall winner of the Quick'n'Dirty Summer Series in the men's 16-48 category where he rode the Specialized Diverge STR.

MIC CHECK: Bikepacking (Ep. 30)

MIC CHECK: Local Legends - Episode 30 with Bikepacking with Sammy Crane-Solis, Shelly Peppe-Nani, and Ranger Dave (Ep. 8)

Welcome to Ep. 30 and the third episode of MIC CHECK. I had really fun time with this conversation and first time having three guests. As I hoped, the conversation flowed with stories and insights of packing, eating, strategizing, and training and what they have learned and gained along the way. We talk about bikepacking primarily in SoCal (e.g. Stagecoach 400) but also reference many other bikepacking adventures (e.g. Arizona Trail).

I had my first bikepacking when I did the Stagecoach 400 in 2012. For those not familiar with the SC 400 - it is a big loop (this year we went clockwise) that starts and ends in the mountains of Idyllwild. It is 400 mile ride/race, unsupported, and to be completed in 5 days. It was the hardest physical thing I've ever done and though I have always considered myself an endurance athlete, this game me a new definition of challenging. If you want to learn more about the SC400, I had a great conversation with Brendan Collier in Ep. 7 about just the Stagecoach - it's origins and the route.

Enjoy this conversation about bikepacking :)

For warning: there are a few bad words and we talk about issues with your privates during these kind of long rides.

Lesley Paterson - XTERRA & Triathlon Cross World Champion (Ep. 29)

Lesley Paterson - XTERRA & Triathlon Cross World Champion (Ep. 29)

Local Legends - Episode 29 with Lesley Paterson

When your Local Legend is not only on Movie app, IMDB, but also has their own Wikipedia page, you know that you have a not just a local legend but a legend. I first started hearing about Lesley when I had Tammy Tabeek (Ep. 13) on Local Legends. Tammy spoke so highly of Lesley's athleticism as well as her character and their timeless experiences training. Then it seemed to be cosmic because I would later hear about Lesley in various conversations in various situations.

As a podcast about passionate cyclist in Southern California, let's start with that her riding and racing accomplishments - Lesley Paterson got (back) into triathlon after moving out to San Diego from her homeland, Scotland. Lesley is a three time (2011, 2012, 2018) XTERRA World Champion AND a two time 2012, 2018) World Triathlon Cross Champion.

She won a silver medal in 2009, 2013, 2015, and 2019 in XTERRA and silver medalist in Cross Triathlon World Championship in 2013.

But there's more.. much more. She's an accomplished writer - publishing The Brave Athlete that she wrote with her husband, Simon Marshall, a sports psychology expert. She is a triathlon coach with her business Braveheart Coaching. And most notably with her amazing accomplishment of screenwriting All Quiet on the Western Front which received nine Oscar nominations, including BAFTA and Academy Awards for Best Adapted Screen play. The film won seven BAFTA awards, including Best Adapted Screenplay.

I was very excited and star struck to have this conversation with Lesley. This woman is packed with energy and focus. In this conversation, we talked about her recent Oscar nomination and the success of the movie. We also talk about her journey to racing triathlons and what it takes to be the best. It was also fun to talk to her about what she thinks about while she's training and what riding and training looks like now.

Enjoy my next Local Legend.

Besides being a total badass, one big reason I wanted to invite her to be a Local Legend is her attitude toward riding and life.  She is well known on social media with and she puts her heart on her sleeve sharing the pain, fun, and glory through it all - the good, the bad, the ugly.  Although she competes against the gods, she is someone many can relate to and her smile and charisma is genuine and gives her the warmth. I was very grateful to have this time with Izzy and talk more about what she makes of all this gravel racing and training.  Her goal to find a balance with training and life and how she has evolved as a racer learning about training, racing, and nutrition.  I also enjoyed talking more about her soccer experience because being a D1 athlete is no joke and to play at that level requires practice and dedication.   Follow Isabel King at king_iz on Instagram Enjoy my next Local Legend.

Jonas Woodruff - Junior Racer (Ep 27)

Jonas Woodruff - Junior Racer (Ep 27)

Local Legends - Episode 27 with Jonas Woodruff

Jonas is a junior racer with a background in mountain biking and gravel and most recently in road racing.  Last year he came in 6th at Unbound 100, 4th in True Grit 100, and 3rd overall in last year's Filthy 50.  He also came in first in his age group at the Sea Otter 80K, BWR San Diego and Leadville Barn Burner.

This was a fun conversation about training and racing -- and we kick it off in the first 10 seconds.

As a 17 year old, Jonas knows what he wants and is working hard to be the best.  His lifestyle, which includes home schooling, sets himself to train and rest while getting his school work in.   Jonas’ experiences and stories are very relatable - whether you are also a junior racer and also balancing school and training, or a racer yourself working on your race strategy and getting yourself out the door on these cold wet winter days.

Sam Ames - Rock Cobbler (Ep. 25)

Local Legends - Episode 25 with Sam Ames, Rock Cobbler - Race Organizer

The notorious Rock Cobbler is having it's ten anniversary this year on February 11, 2023.  Last year was my first time there and it was everything it was promised to be - hard, long, beautiful, and very memorable.   I did the race with my husband, Simon, and he felt the exact way.  We are both excited to come back and be part of this event this year.

As I was preparing for this race which requires stamina, strength, and skills, I had a thought..."Chi, why don't you have Sam on Local Legends" - he is a legend and he is passionate about cycling and he does impact the community.  Then I thought, but it's Bakersfield and well Bakersfield is considered Central California, not SoCal.  I even googled it and essentially Southern California is anything south of San Luis Obispo and Bakersfield.  However, with so many from San Diego, Orange County and LA trekking up to Rock Cobbler, I consider Sam and Rock Cobbler our SoCal cool cousin!

Sam Ames, created Rock Cobbler after being inspired by the Belgian Waffle Ride, his love for adventure and Bakersfield, and his own rich experience with road and Cyclocross racing.  He is born, raised and proud member of the Bakersfield community and values the diverse and immense amount of dirt and grassland available.   I had a blast talking with Sam about his cycling racing history, origins of Rock Cobbler, how it is grown and evolved, and what the Rock Cobbler means to him.

Sam's Achievements include

  • Semi-Professional (Barcelona regional team) road racer in Europe
  • General manager at Action Sports
  • CEO of Ames Works LLC
  • Chef of numerous restaurants in Bakersfield

Nikki Peterson - Pro Racer & NICA Director (Ep. 24)

Local Legends - Episode 24 with Nikki Peterson

Nikki Peterson is a jack of all trades and a master of them all - she races professionally (both gravel and mountain biking), coaches athletes with Source Endurance, League Director of the Nevada North Interscholastic Cycling League, Program Coordinator for Reno Devo, and a podcast host.  But what makes Nikki shine is her sincere personality without any presumptions.  In this conversation, she shares her most recent decision and journey to move from SoCal to Reno to follow her heart by joining her favorite passions - biking, mountain lifestyle, education, and working with kids.  She also shares how she has overcome some personal struggles with a concussion and her diagnosis of ADD and how she has used these struggles as opportunities to help her shape her future.

I met Nikki about ten years ago when she was riding with Bear Valley Bikes and it has been fun to watch her grow as an athlete and see her career bloom. Though I knew her, it was great to have this conversation to learn more about her experiences and her positivity that is very contagious.

Sprockids mission is to engage kids in mountain biking.  But they also build confidence and community in a supportive way.  As you will hear from our next Local Legends guests - riding a bike is a tool to independence but also helps with mindset and that feeling that comes from riding two wheels outside - pure joy.

I had so much fun in this conversation with Sean and Sarah from Sprockids.  They share their own stories of riding when they were young, coming back from injuries, how Sprockids organically happened and how it bloomed in 2020 and continues to grow.

Even if you don’t have young kids, their approach to getting kids on bikes, teaching skills, their leadership role and growing the community one kid is very noble and inspiring.  To learn more about Sprockids, support this effort, and to join their programs, visit https://www.sprockidssd.com/

Susie Murphy, Executive Director at SDMBA (Ep. 19)

Local Legends - Episode 19 with Susie Murphy -  Advocating for mountain bike trails in San Diego

Susie Murphy has a huge impact on the trails we ride in San Diego.  Her role as the Executive Director (since 2015) at San Diego Mountain Bike Association, a non profit advocacy group aiming to improve trails in San Diego for mountain biking since 1994, puts her on the ground, in meetings, and planning to advocate for trails.  Her role is multifaceted from creating relationships with partner organizations and land managers, to coordinating volunteer work and projects to get new trails in the ground or improve current trails.  It’s because of Susie, her team, and the volunteers at SDMBA that mountain bikers can enjoy some epic singletrack from Chula Vista to Carlsbad to Laguna Mountains.

In this interview, we discuss:

Jake Orness - Director of Photography (Ep. 18)

Jake Orness - Director of Photography (Ep. 18)

Local Legends - Episode 18 with Jake Orness (Director of Photography)

I’m super stoked to have Jake Orness - better known as JPOV - Director of Photography on this podcast.  He is responsible for many of the photos and drone-recorded footage that you may have seen like the Belgian Waffle Ride, San Diego.  Jake is an interesting and talented person on the bike as a rider and off the bike behind the lens as a photographer and videographer.

In this podcast we highlight the these two sides of Jake that gives him the tools to capture riding and share with the rest of the world the athleticism, fitness and style of riding on two wheels.  On the side he has decades of experience of riding and racing all kinds of bikes from BMX, to road and gravel riding. And on the other side, his passion and dedication to learn all there is to know about filming bikes - both on the ground and in the air.

I really enjoyed this conversation and the flow of stories that paint the picture of his experiences.  From riding around in Cardiff as a teenager, surfing, to his gnarly experience of breaking his back at Diablo park, to his experience working for Giant Bikes, and then selling all he could to buy his first camera.  This is one of my longer interviews -- the time flew by with all these great stories.

I encourage you to follow his work on his Instagram page at @jpovphoto.  You can also find Jake riding his bike at the local Thursday night gravel rides at Rouleur Brewing in Carlsbad.

Enjoy my next Local Legend.

Michael Macare - Doing The Possible (Ep. 17)

Michael Macare - Doing The Possible (Ep. 17)

EPISODE 17 with Michael Macare - your ‘normal guy’ making the impossible..possible.

I’ve known Michael for about 6 years when he joined the TASCO-mtb race team - with his happy and gregarious attitude, we became instafriends :).  For as long as I have known Michael, he has set his goals far and long going for races that are at the edge of his grasp.   This year, he successfully completed Unbound -  for those who are not as familiar with gravel races - Unbound is a 200 mile gravel race in Emporia, Kansas.  When I first heard about this race, I honestly thought that was an insane ride.  Why would anyone in their right mind ride for 200 miles in one day.  The professionals complete this race in 9-10 hours holding 20 mph average with  the last riders completing the ride in 20 hours.

Listeners, I want to be completely transparent, Michael is an athlete that I coached to prepare him for BWR San Diego in 2019 and 2022 and for Unbound on June 4 of this year.  But that’s not why I asked him to be a guest…it’s his story and lifestyle that I feel make him more approachable and relatable which have the potential to impact so many more riders.  He does mention coaching but completely unsolicited.

In this conversation, we talk about...

  • how he got into endurance riding
  • how riding and specifically endurance riding has impacted his life
  • the process to get to Unbound
  • we also talk deeper about what drives him to do the impossible and what gives him the confidence to get to the start line and even more, the strength to get to the finish line.

Jim Bradford - Skills & Jump Coach (Ep. 16)

Jim Bradford - Skills & Jump Coach (Ep. 16)

Local Legends - Episode 16 with Jim Bradford (Skills & Jump Coach)

Jim operators Del Sur Dirt - a local San Diego coach that works with kids to adults on dirt skills.  As a BICP coach, he works one-on-one and in small groups on mountain skills ranging from cornering to gap jumping.  Jim comes from a unique and diverse background - with a career as a river guide to running a construction company.  He moved to San Diego in 2006 and resides near Rancho Bernardo; and in 2019, got a mountain bike after a 25 year bike hiatus.

Jim's focus these days is helping young kids to 'send' gap jumps.  His approach is individualized and calculated focusing on skills and progression to create a 'paintbrush' of expression on the bike.

When curating this conversation, Jim and I went out for a bike ride beforehand to see the 'lay of the land' and the canvas of his training.  We shared a lot of similar ethos to riding and coaching.  Riding and talking with Jim came easy and brought joy.  It was great to get to know Jim and his coaching and coaching style.  He is bringing a lot to the community and helping so many riders love the ride.  Jim is a true Local Legend.

Enjoy this conversation with Jim :)

Tammy Tabeek - World Champion Downhill and XTERRA Racer (Ep. 13)

Tammy Tabeek - World Champion Downhill and XTERRA Racer (Ep. 13)

Local Legends - Episode 13 with Tammy Tabeek

If there's a force to be reckoned with, it's with this fine lady. Tammy is an accomplished cyclists a mountain biker, road rider, downhiller, and triathlete (and not to mention racketball player).  I've had the pleasure of riding and racing against Tammy over the years and honestly not knowing her background - which explains her slam dunk performance ...BAM!

Tammy has been riding since the 80s and racing since the 90s.  She is currently a a FIVE TIME World Champion - 3 in Downhill and 2 in Xterra off road triathlon.  She continues to race her bike locally in the Quick'n'Dirty races, participated recently in the Wafer BWR (coming in fourth in AG), currently training for Rebeca's Private Idaho representing Challenged Athletes Foundation.  Her list of accolades are almost too numerous to outline.   And she's not slowing down people.

Tammy is an inspiring and caring person which really shines in this conversation.  It was such a pleasure to talk to Tammy and she definitely left  vibration to grow and to embrace the process.

Brian Scarbrough - Professional Racer & National XC Champion (Ep 15)

Brian Scarbrough - Professional Racer & National XC Champion (Ep 15)

EPISODE 15 with Brian Scarbrough - Professional Racer & National XC Champion

Brian Scarbrough is a local San Diegan, who raced BMX as a young child.  He didn’t find cross country mountain biking until much later.  Now in his thirties, Brian races professionally with Competitive Metals.  You will often see Brian racing at in local races such as the QnD summer series and the BWR San Diego;  racing shoulder to shoulder with other local legends such as Pete Tholl (Ep. 4) and Phil Tinstman (Ep. 11), as well as national pros like Pete Stetina, and against junior racers who are coming up hot on his heels.

Brian won the national XC championship in 2016 and recently won the 2022 BWR Dubbelberg Header in San Diego which includes racing the waffle + wafer on consecutive days...that’s approximately 200 miles.  His cumulative time was 11 hours and 15 seconds.  Just to put in perspective, an athlete aims to do the waffle in 9-10 hours and the wafer in 5-6 hours.   This interview was recorded two weeks after his win back in May.

It was a delight to get a chance to talk to Brian about his racing, his BMX racing history, and how that influences his racing today. We discuss his current training, balancing his work, and also the success of his most recent BWR Dubbel, .  It’s funny because I’ve seen and known Brian for years but never got to know him.   he is a thoughtful and genuinely nice gentleman that is true to himself and his riding.

Enjoy this conversation with Brian Scarbrough.

Kevin Lentz Legacy with Lauren Lentz (Ep. 14)

Kevin Lentz Legacy with Lauren Lentz (Ep. 14)

Local Legends - Episode 14 with Lauren Lentz - Kevin Lentz Legacy

In this conversation, I sit with  Lauren Lentz, Kevin’s widow, to share his story.  Whether you knew him personally or perhaps only heard about him, this conversation highlights who he was as husband, a friend, a father and a rider.

I knew Kevin from our time together on the TASCO-mtb race team back in 2016.  He was a strong, skilled rider with a no-nonsense way about him.  He had no ego and he was always super chill.

He wasn't just a mountain biker, he also road and raced road bikes with the Celo Team.

In addition to talking about how he got into riding and his love for riding, we go deep in this conversation about loss and death.

While I struggle to know what to say, Lauren's warmth and openness brings light and lightness to the conversation. She has such a strong hold of her emotions and words that it helps bridge the silence

Kevin had an impact on everyone who rode with him and had deep friendships with many of his cycling friends.  The intent of this interview is to honor him and his spirit.

Pete Tholl - Mountain Bike, Road and Gravel Racer (Ep. 4)

Pete Tholl - Mountain Bike, Road and Gravel Racer (Ep. 4)

Local Legends - Episode 4 with Pete Tholl

Pete was born and raised in San Diego growing up Encinitas and graduating from San Dieguito High School.  Pete got into riding by some friends and later started road racing in 1988 with the Swamis Race Team.  In 1993, he took a hiatus from racing and riding when he started a family.  Later when his kids were in high school he picked up the bike again and has been riding and racing ever since.

In this interview

As i mentioned, I didn’t know about his road racing experience before this interview; however,  I did know Pete consistently performed at the top of mountain bike races competing in Cat 1 as well as gravel races.  I’ve known Pete since 2016 when we raced on TASCO-MTB race team.  This was a unique race team that was curated by Milwaukee Marc and with Nate (TASCO owner) after a virtual Strava race called "Tour de Dirt" brought riders out of their holes competing on segments and later created a home for a band of misfits.

For me, I always leaned into what Pete had to say because he shares lot of wisdom as a racer and athlete with no nonsense, no ego, no bullshit.

This interview may seem out of order because it was originally recorded on Dec 1, 2021  when I was doing Local Legends on Instagram Live. For those new to Local Legends and this podcast, I originally interviewed my guests on Instagram Live not knowing what would come of these interviews.  It wasn't until after sixty interview, that I decided to change to a podcast platform to be more easily accessible.

It also seemed fitting to re-release this episode after the most recent interview with Chris Horner where Pete is mentioned a few times. It’s because of this interview with Pete that I learned about Pete's road racing history and about Chris Horner.

Phil Tinstman - X-Games Gold Medalist & RAAM World Record Holder (Ep. 11)

Local Legends - Episode 11 with Phil Tinstman

Phil is an highly accomplished and decorated cyclist with an X-games gold medal and the RAAM world record to his name (((mic drop!!)))

Phil is also a fellow San Marcos neighbor who is raising 2 children, works, and continues to ride his bike 10-20 hours a week!!   Riding bikes all his life including BMX, Motocross, Downhilling, Road and Gravel, he continues his journey and his passion for riding thrives.  At the time of this interview in January 2022, he was training to do the grueling 24-hours of Old Pueblo with his teammates Victor Sheldon (Ep. 1), Pete Tholl (Ep. 4) and Brandon Mills.

He continues to stay busy in the cycling community and...

  • is racing for Monster Race Team
  • partner of Monument of Cycling with MMX (Ep. 2) to put on the Belgian Waffle Ride - San Diego, Cedar City, North Carolina, and Kansas.
  • preparing for an 8-person RAAM (Race Across America) in June 2022
  • NICA coach with his kids and their school

This interview is jam packed with stories from professional downhilling in the 90s, burning out and then finding the love again, dappling in triathlons, integrating riding and raising a family and his experiences with RAAM.  The documentary "Four by 3000" is worth watching and is inspiring to say the least!

MIC CHECK: Conversation With My Daughters About Training (Ep. 10)

MIC CHECK: Conversation With My Daughters About Training (Ep. 10)

Welcome to the first installment of Mic Check - a different kind of interview where turn the mic on myself and share part of the lifestyle, training, and lessons of leading a life of riding and outdoor adventure.

This interview is special because I bring my children forward and have them give their thoughts and reflection on how life was like having a mom who was training.  I tend to wear my heart on my sleeve but things related to my children, I keep those cards close to my heart.  Their voice (literally) have a lot of value.  As a parent, I have try to imagine what lessons and values they are learning but they have their own story to tell. Poetically and to the point.  Originally, I was going to share my story solo; and later asked them if they wanted to be part of it.  Serena (17) and Jade (21) both happily wanted to participate.  The girls received the questions prior to this interview, as to not blind side them. Alex (15) didn't want to be interviewed live; however, I share her responses to these questions at the end.

They were asked:

  1. How did you feel when I was training for long periods of time and not at home or with you?
  2. What things do you enjoy doing together now and did you enjoy when you were little?
  3. what didn’t you enjoy How does movement, training and sport impact your life?
  4. What are your top 3 values for yourself?

I really loved this conversation and glad it was recorded.  I will cherish this and would be fun to see how their feelings and thoughts evolve over time.

In this interview we discuss

  • My athletic journey pre kids, during their adolescents and now.
  • What training looked like with kids Integrating training
  • The paradox of "staying home" and "train..you're kids will understand"
  • Serena summiting Whitney alone
  • ACL injuries and reinventing the self for Serena and Alex (15)

We recorded this interview as a Zoom Meeting on the computer so there is a little distortion in the sound when the computer wasn't facing the speaker.

Ranger Dave - Naturalist, Graveler, Photographer (Ep. 8)

Local Legends - Episode 8 with David Hekel, Ranger, Rider, Photographer

Ranger Dave is many things - a ranger, rider, and passionate about all things in nature.  If you ride Hodges, raced in the QnD Filthy 50, or participated annual Archipelago or the BWR, you have been on the trails he oversees and directly affects these trails.  The funny thing is I've talked to Dave many times not knowing he is Ranger Dave.. I knew him from gravel rides.  You learn quickly that he is a very cool guy, strong rider and genuinely fun laugh.  Then I learned he was a ranger and his cool factor went up. I had so much fun talking with Dave about his role at SDRP and how he became a ranger which is a fun story, also talked about how he got into cycling and his passion for riding, and learned so much about his direct affect on the trails.  It was also fun to talk more about his Scottish heritage and the trips he offers in Scotland and future bike trips which he accounts is because of the Freedom to Roam and 3 Rules that allows people to bike ANYWHERE in Scotland.
