Heartstopper's Darcy Olsson & queer youth homelessness featuring charities Belong To and AKT

Join us for part two of special episodes as we take inspiration from Darcy’s story-line in Heartstopper to explore some of the more painful experiences faced by some LGBTQ+ teens dealing with abuse, the fear of displacement and homelessness.

Joining me this week are Melissa from Queer Homeless Charity AKT as well as Brenda from Queer Youth Charity Belong To. Together we discuss how Darcy’s experiences in Heartstopper mirror a tragic real-life problem for many queer teenagers. According to The Trevor Project’s 2021 National Survey on LGBTQ Youth Mental Health, 28 percent of queer youth in the U.S. reported housing instability or complete displacement.

Thoughtful and Empowering

Heartstopper has had a huge impact on me and I’m grateful to find others who want to talk about it and the issues it brings up as much as I do. I am so impressed that Jamie does this by bringing on many amazing leaders who work towards empowering queer youth in the UK, and I am a beneficiary of all your stories, impressions, and personal connections which helps me get a pulse on progress/pushback in regards to efforts towards creating/maintaining safe spaces for queer youth in schools and in the community. Well done! I’m also a fan of Jamie’s voice lol. Bravo to all of you! Carry on!
