Inside this issue: Internet blackout across African countries, a daily journal to document your daily wins, and how to transition into customer success roles.
View in browser

Hey there,

We’re finally back! It’s been a few weeks since we sent an issue of this newsletter due to a technical difficulty on our email platform, and we apologise for the long unannounced break. Let's get right into it.,

Last week, several African countries, including South Africa, Nigeria, Ivory Coast, Liberia, Benin, Ghana and Burkina Faso, experienced significant internet network outages.

According to BBC, the network disruption was caused by damage to international undersea cables running along the West African coastline. Major networks have begun rerouting their traffic through alternate paths in order to restore connectivity to users who have been affected by the outage. However, reports say full restoration could potentially take weeks or months, posing many challenges for internet-dependent activities during this period.

On the bright side, if you were looking for an opportunity to stay off that annoying meeting this week, I think you have a perfect excuse. You’re welcome!

My Tech Transition: How Nduka Dike moved from Computer Engineer to Communications Manager

After a brief stint as an engineer, Nduka Dike fully embraced his creative side and became a copywriter. Currently the communications manager at Risevest, he tells us how he transitioned into the tech industry.

Dear ConTech,

I just finished two courses, one on digital marketing and the other on copywriting. I am aspiring to be a social media manager and don’t know what next step to take. I would really love some advice on how to navigate this.

– Moyo

Hi Moyo,

Congratulations on completing your courses in digital marketing and copywriting! To help you navigate your next steps in social media management, here are some suggestions:

  1. Practise what you've learned: Now that you've completed these courses, apply your newfound knowledge in practical settings. If you can’t get a job immediately, consider volunteering for non-profit organisations, interning at companies, working on personal projects related to social media management, or offering to assist friends or family with their social media presence. This hands-on experience will build your skills and provide tangible proof of your capabilities to potential employers.
  2. Be vocal about your job search: Don't keep your job search a secret! Let everyone in your network know that you're actively seeking opportunities in social media management. This includes friends, family, former colleagues, and even connections on social media platforms like LinkedIn. You never know who might have leads or connections that could lead to your next job opportunity.
  3. Create a strong CV or portfolio: Take time to craft a compelling CV or portfolio that highlights your relevant skills, certifications, and experience (if any). Tailor your resume to emphasise your proficiency in social media management, and consider creating an online portfolio or website to showcase your work samples.
  4. Expand your network: Joining relevant communities and networking on platforms like LinkedIn can be invaluable for expanding your professional network and uncovering job opportunities. Seek out LinkedIn groups related to social media management, digital marketing, and copywriting, and actively engage with other members by participating in discussions, sharing insights, and connecting with industry professionals. Additionally, don't hesitate to attend industry events, webinars, or workshops where you can network with professionals in the field.
  5. Grow your skills: While you've already completed courses in digital marketing and copywriting, it's essential to stay updated on the latest trends and technologies in social media management. Stay abreast of industry developments by reading blogs, attending webinars, and taking additional courses or certifications in areas such as social media analytics, content strategy, or community management. By continuously enhancing your skills and knowledge, you'll position yourself as a competitive candidate in the job market.

By following these steps, you'll be well-equipped to navigate your career path in social media management and land your desired role in the field. Remember to stay persistent, proactive, and open to new opportunities as you pursue your career goals.

How to Excel in Your Career in 2024

Excelling in your career never comes by accident. It’s a combination of hard work, focus, and actionable strategies aligned with your goals. It’s also a pathway to professional advancement, career growth, and lasting impact in your field. Below is a list of some of those strategies you can implement to achieve career excellence this year.

    1. Do work that matters, not just what's convenient. In 2024, prioritise initiatives that fuel growth for the business, the company, and your own professional development. Be brutally honest about your work. If it doesn't count, don't commit resources to it.
    2. Acquire new skills and master new tools. Go beyond your comfort zone by increasing your knowledge. Select a new skill for H1 and another for H2. If you're a fast learner, a skill per quarter works. The important thing is to keep learning. Feel the pressure? Embrace it!.
    3. Do work you'll be proud of. Work that you can show the world, that you can put your name behind — that's what you should be interested in doing. Don't settle for mediocre work; don't do the barest minimum. Aim for amazing work, and always strive for excellence.
    4. Fall in love with the business side of things. This is not the year to just do things. Ask questions on how what you do connects with the business’ goals. How does it contribute to the bottom line? Be obsessed with the business side of things
    5. Connect with other professionals. You need people who understand the space you're working in. This year, be intentional about connecting with fellow marketers online and offline. Engage with their posts, and comment when you have thoughts. Attend professional events..

Let's make 2024 your year of success and growth. Cheers to an amazing year!
