Waxahatchee – “Bored”

The irony of “Bored”, the latest single from Waxahatchee’s forthcoming album, Tigers Blood, is that it’s anything but. Behind Katie Crutchfield’s voice and pen, she’s assembled herself an impressive alt-country band featuring the likes of Wednesday’s MJ Lenderman, Spencer Tweedy, Brad and Phil Cook, and Nick Bothrath to fill in those little details that were only flirted with on 2020’s Saint Cloud in her songwriting frame. A ramshackle of guitars dueling between pluckiness and electric reeling, thumping bass paired with a steadfast drum, and the ultra necessary pedal steel give this one a lot to go on with. The busy of it all matches Katie Crutchfield’s inner energy pouring out all too fittingly, blustered with her skin airy thin. “Take it easy, honey,” she warns early on. Maybe that’s her speaking to herself. Maybe it’s a warning for another to heed. She’s in no place to have her emotions stirred further either way, and so “Bored” works out her anger for her.
