Kamasi Washington – “Prologue”

Six years after his last album, Heaven and Earth, rearranged the cosmos through sound, Kamasi Washington returns to our gravity in new motion with an album inspired by dance. “It’s not literal,” he’s made sure to point out, but entitling it Fearless Movement and providing its first glimpse, “Progue”, are already epitomizing a certain energy. Its rapid firing ensemble of brass and percussive fits race centripetal through our orbit, as if defying physical law. This isn’t just Washington and his cast of collaborators performing avant-jazz at an atypical speed, however. As the listen’s momentum fleets, it’s then where Washington again escapes our terrestrial gravitas. An errant wavelength here. Something else that catches your ear from the outer limits elsewhere. Or maybe this tameless, exuberant alien journey is one that has always existed from the human experience inside…
