Question your very reality when taking in Cola’s “Pallor Tricks”, or perhaps more astutely in the age of content creation as a lived second nature — be it performative social media, reality TV, or a culture where others (subconsciously?) curate their personas when interacting with strangers behind screens and even in front of the very people who claim to “know” them IRL — the sincerity of human emotion. It’s a nerving experience to say the least, as the latest single from the Montreal-rooted punk band’s forthcoming sophomore album, The Gloss, skewers the table saw of it all with centripetal careening and jigsaw riffage, mimicking a pull into and out of varying versions of this world. “Fail to mention / More direct when I tell you / You could be forgiven / My taste is avant-poor,” vocalist and guitarist Tim Darcy leans into creeping malaise when attempting to decipher it. He’s perhaps the only one in this scene grounded within the transparent side. “Conversation / What are you waiting for? / Take a beat while / I wait on bended knee.” No one would fault him for needing to sit this one out at this stage. Not when you can’t take anyone’s word at face value anymore…
