Grade 8 - 9 Transition

Welcome to High School

Dr. Ocki Fernandes, High School Principal

Dear Class of 2028,

Welcome to Stamford American High School.

In the High School our focus is not only academics but also a culture of care: developing positive relationships to ensure that every student is provided with the highest quality education in a safe and supportive community. We endeavour to create a culture where the focus is on every student, every heart, and every mind. To address this vision you each are assigned to a teacher advisor, a Head of Pastoral Care, a Head of Grade as well as a Guidance Counsellor and an Academic Counsellor. Get to know these educators well in your time with us. They will help you navigate our complex high school.

Unlike many other schools, the High School Office (located on F6) is a welcoming space and you are invited to seek out Ms Gibbons, the Office Manager, whenever you have a query. Mr Burrows, Ms Grafe and my office doors are always open: drop by to introduce yourself or just say "Hi".

As an IB Continuum World School Grade 9 students follow the Middle Years Programme outlined below. In Grade 10 students will be able to access one Advanced Placement (AP) course. In Grades 11 and 12, besides an US High School Diploma, students will be able to opt to study for an additional International Baccalaureate Diploma, International Advanced Placement Diploma, Business and Technology Education Council (BTEC) Diploma in the Arts, or a blended academic pathway consisting of a combination of courses from the above programs.

Please make use of all the high school has to offer: the many co-curricular activities; designing your 4-Year Plan with your college and career counsellors; opportunities to serve others outside the community; and the opportunity to serve in the Stamford Community in a leadership capacity. The high school is your time to begin planning and advocating for your unique future!

We wish you a successful school year.

As an MYP student at Stamford you will have many opportunities to celebrate your learning by working together with your peers and learning from each other in unique ways. Your teachers will support this  learning by constructing meaningful learning experiences to help you gain insight into the content and  topics covered in each subject area.

The lessons you experience are planned for you to experience opportunities for inquiry, action and reflection. This approach to learning helps you as a learner to ask questions which help you better understand the world around you.  At Stamford you are empowered to become a lifelong learner and become part of a community of learners who are able to look at the challenging  issues  impacting our world as a problem solver and solutions thinker. We look forward to welcoming you to the High School in Grade 9.

Below you will find the HS Academic Handbook if you would like to familiarise yourself with our programmes, policies, and procedures.
