When this Los Angeles home was sold to its new family from the original owner, it was meticulously kept, but a bit dated. Designer, Alison White, brought it up to date with a modern farmhouse aesthetic that lives in the present and honors its past. From Alison White Design… Our goal was to bring this sweet home into the 21st Century, consistent with the wants and needs of today’s buyers. To that end, we worked to open up the kitchen to the dining room and living room, in order to have an open concept living space. When we took down the walls, we realized that it was actually a little TOO open, so we added back a partial wall to better suit the space! We really wanted a center island in the kitchen, but with the space constraints of a galley kitchen, that just wasn’t going to be a possibility in this home. Instead, we created a large peninsula at the end of the open galley kitchen, which served as our “island”. The peninsula worked out very well, and no one who came through commented on the lack of an island. We also enlarged a small bedroom by taking space from an unneeded third master closet, and reconfigured the master bathroom to better utilize the space, which included adding a bathtub and a separate toilet room.

Once the floorplan was squared away, we focused on making it chic without blowing the budget. We scored some amazing bathroom vanities at the Restoration Hardware outlet, and ordered tile from Bedrosian’s on Black Friday. We kept the house mostly black, white and wood/gold as our theme, to ensure its versatility for furnishings.
