There are those who wince at the thought of an all-white room (purely for the fact that they’ll dirty it up in two seconds) and those who see a white canvas and think: endless possibilities. If you’re here, you’re probably on the latter team and you’re ready for what we’re about to deliver. Melissa Shapiro is serving up a fresh white living room, with a Deb Presutto print as the jumping-off point. The space is layered with just the right amount of texture and subtle color, and plenty of interest thanks to the built-in shelving styled to perfection. The room really comes to life in Christopher Lee‘s magazine-quality shots that we’re honored to share with you today.

How would you describe the style of this space?

I’d describe the style of this room as Cali Casual meets Winter Whites… The word I hear most often when people are looking at my Instagram page is “clean,” and I’m not mad about it. I gravitate towards spaces that are bright, open and airy and love a neutral palette with lots of white, contrasting black, and natural materials like rattan, seagrass and light wood tones for added warmth and texture.

What was the jumping-off point for this room? Was there a piece or element that inspired the overall design?

The inspiration for this room was the gorgeous giclee art print of Big Sur by artist Deb Presutto. I’d been looking forever for a landscape piece that was soft, muted, and pulled in the hues of the rug so when I came across this one on Deb’s website, I knew it had to be mine. I then layered in the smaller black and white geometric piece for contrast and am thrilled with how they look together on the mantel. I also installed the Lucca Iron Chandelier from Pottery Barn and absolutely love how it’s clean, curved silhouette anchors the room.
