Character's manga appearance

Kastiel is a lean yet muscular young male with a light ash blonde undercut and deep crimson eyes. He has burn scars on both his palms which are usually covered as well as scars on his chest from top surgery. His spider tattoo is also located on his sternum. He often wears drop earrings ornamented with an amethyst on both ears, though only the left ear has an extra chain connecting to the helix.

He is first shown wearing a pastel purple hoodie, topped with a black crop top, black cargo shorts, black and white boots with matching purple knee high socks with a silver choker and black fingerless gloves as accessories. Later in the series he grows out his hair into a mullet and his outfit changes into a black turtlenecked vest, and gray cargo pants, laced with gold body jewelry containing gems of red beryl, black boots, and black fingerless sleeves.

Personality

At first glance Kastiel can come off as a bit arrogant but overall pretty fun to be around. He is self centered and attention seeking, seeing himself above most people while putting only Chrollo on a pedestal above himself. Kastiel truly only cares what Chrollo thinks of him and isn’t bothered if others have unsavory thoughts on him. Often longing for Chrollo’s praise and validation as he never got it from his father. Though being a bad person to outsiders, Kastiel cares deeply for those close to him like the troupe, being extremely loyal to Chrollo and the Spider as a whole, always being extremely reliable to them. He also has a soft spot for children, especially when he can see his younger self in them much like with Gon.

Kastiel is spontaneous and outgoing, usually being the first to strike up a conversation but if in a bad mood he can also be quiet and reserved like when starting out with the Hunter Exam. He can be hot headed at times and make known to whoever’s closest that he is annoyed. Much like getting snarky, Kastiel is also viewed as childish, being a sore loser and bratty at times. Not to mention his interest in video games and sweets can also be viewed as child-like. He’s had an obsession with sugar and sweets since he was little as it was quite hard to come by in Meteor City which leaned into his Nen ability and in this vain he also can’t handle any sort of spice to his food.

While being able to put on a mask of sanity, Kastiel is completely psychotic, taking pleasure in committing most crimes and believes he deserves a fan base for being so “amazing”. He is a kleptomaniac, often stealing outside of jobs just for the sake of it. Kastiel is also extremely good at acting and changing his personality on the spot, often doing this to manipulate those around them. Not to mention Kastiel is also overtly flirty and a bit perversely minded, he’s also a hypocrite as they label those as some reasons they dislike Hisoka.

Background

Kyra was born and raised in Meteor City, having no official record of her existence. Her mother went missing when she was just an infant leaving Kyra with her abusive father Azel. He hated his life in Meteor City, and hating that his partner left him so he took that anger out on Kyra who, in his eyes, resembled her mother.

One day Kyra ran away from their hamlet, trying to find refuge in the Meteor City church, bumping into Chrollo and covering his mouth as the two hid from Azel. Once the coast was clear Kyra let go of Chrollo and introduced themselves as Kastiel, not being too fond of their birth name. The ravenette was shocked to meet Kastiel as not many kids go to the church but was open to sparking a conversation. Though at this time Kastiel didn’t explain why they ran away. Despite that it didn’t take long for the two to become friends. While there, they tried to get an education with Chrollo, learning to read and write from the Pastor. Though found it extremely difficult with their undiagnosed dyslexia, Kastiel seemed to really get a grasp on mathematics whenever it was brought up.

Kastiel still tried to visit their father at times, trying to make a connection as he was the only family they had but was met with malice on Azel’s end. It had become so apparent they couldn’t keep it a secret anymore and had to tell Chrollo as he treated their injuries. This left a nasty taste in Chrollo’s mouth and he urged them not to go back anymore. Not too long after this period as well, Kastiel had Chrollo help them cut their hair and started dressing more masculine, going around as if they were a boy.

As the years passed Kastiel and Chrollo started to be more acquainted with the other kids of Meteor City and gained a good friend group. One day Kastiel went out to the garage dumps with Chrollo, Franklin, and Shalnark in search of a new VHS tape. Upon making their retreat, the 4 were spotted by Machi who reported to Uvogin. Kastiel watched him take out Shalnark and giggle to himself at the irony but also knowing he was ok. Once Franklin starts to fight with Uvo, Kastiel takes this opportunity to escape with Chrollo. The ravenette gives Kastiel the tape, telling him to hide it until they reach the church, which he does by putting it under his shirt. Once cut off by Phinks and Feitan, Kastiel blows a raspberry at the two and refuses to give them the tape but watches as Chrollo tricks them with a Gelman language tape.

The two reach the church where they had a short chat with Father Lisores before going to the AV room. They see Pakunoda there and together they watch the Power Cleaners movie. Given it’s in a foreign language, Chrollo gets the idea to dub it over. Kastiel loves this idea and adds that they can make it a big show for others in the city, always having a dream of being a star. They get Sheila and Sarasa in on the idea and once Chrollo finishes the script they start recording with Kastiel helping Chrollo with some of the male voices, helping practice deepening their own voice.

Once finished, Kastiel and Chrollo set up to preview the movie in the church. Both Uvogin and Phinks come up to Chrollo with seemingly malicious intentions but Sarasa takes care of them. After Sheila’s comment about the term ‘lil bro’ being suited for Chrollo, Kastiel chimes in to tease him. Once the show begins, the kids of Meteor City are delighted though it doesn’t last long as the audio stops working. Seeing Chrollo take a microphone on stage, Kastiel instantly joins him, doing the voices live, with the three girls soon joining as well. Although voicing a villain themselves and getting quite into the role, Kastiel is quite taken aback by Chrollo’s portrayal of his villain, being able to feel the aura around him.

Soon the show ends and Uvogin comes to them wanting to voice a character in the next taping. Soon they have a whole dubbing group with: Chrollo, Kastiel, Uvogin, Sheila, Sarasa, Nobunaga, Feitan, Phinks, Shalnark, Pakunoda, Franklin, and Machi. The scripts were mostly left to Chrollo while the others rehearsed and tightened ties with each other. During this time Kastiel and Shalnark’s friendship really started to grow as they shared a lot of similar interests and given Chrollo always seemed busy at that point. Later on the group named themselves and become “Troupe”.

On the day of the show, Sarasa didn’t join, they learned she had been missing since yesterday. Seeing Chrollo shy up and cry on stage as he announced this information, Kastiel goes up and comforts him, reassuring that it's not his fault and that they'll find her. After getting the other kids on board for a search party, Kastiel goes with Chrollo and Uvogin to Uga Forest to look for Sarasa. There they found the scene of her death, the instruments of torture, her corpse in a sack, and a note which only Chrollo was able to read. Kastiel was sickened by the sight of her destroyed body and teared up, going to Chrollo's side once he was pushed down by Uvogin. Being curious about the note’s contaminants but didn’t push him in the moment.

After some time Kastiel attended Sarasa’s funeral with the others, surprised at how well the corpse looked after Ms. Lenko worked on it. Once the ceremony finished, Kastiel walked out with Shalnark where they met up with Chrollo and Uvogin. Kastiel was enthralled by Chrollo’s plan to reform Meteor City and make a website to bring together criminals for their revenge in 3 years. Although the idea of killing people does scare Kastiel a bit he agrees to join Chrollo, pledging to always be at his side.

Soon once the others leave, Kastiel and Chrollo converse with each other, the blonde being honest about his feelings with his idea and Chrollo telling him the containments of the note, explaining why killing and being a true villain is necessary. Kastiel agrees and the two plan to go off together for the 3 years to train and get the funds necessary for the website. They prepare to leave, getting things together and planning to meet up at the river bank when they’re ready. During this time Kastiel goes to his hamlet to try and reconcile with Azel after months of no contact, telling him everything that has happened recently, hoping for his approval and to be proud. This backfires as the conversation turns physical with Azel striking Kastiel down, forbidding him from leaving. After a few more hits, Kastiel feels his body suddenly get a burst of energy as aura surrounds his body. The boy then picks up a shard of glass and instinctively stabs Azel in the throat, killing him in self defense. Once the adrenaline wears off Kastiel meets their resolve, actually finding the killing quite easy. He also makes a promise to himself not to cry, seeing how it never got him anywhere in the past. Kastiel washes the blood off himself the best he could before meeting up with Chrollo.

After 3 years, Chrollo and Kastiel founded the Phantom Troupe along with Franklin, Uvogin, Machi, Pakunoda, Feitan, Nobunaga, Phinks and Shalnark. After this time Kastiel was a part of every job held by the group, including the Kurta massacre. Sometime before the plot he also got into a relationship with Chrollo.

Plot
Hunter Exam arc

Kastiel is first introduced as Tonpa reflects on the newbies, shown with the badge #67 as he instantly turned down a conversation with Tonpa and appears to be quite stuck up.

First Phase

Following Satotz through the tunnel, Kastiel stays at the very front effortlessly. Later into the phase Kastiel is seen spying on Hisoka during his interaction with Gon, only to be called out by the magician. Kastiel jumps down from the tree to reveal himself, pretty annoyed with Hisoka as it’s clear he doesn’t like him. Hisoka muses that Kastiel should carry Leorio but the idea is instantly shot down. Once Hisoka leaves Kastiel asks if Gon can make it to the second phase himself and once reassured he leaves.

Second Phase

Kastiel is shown visually upset upon hearing that this phase will involve cooking but doesn’t act out the others. We see him take to the trees to scour the land for pigs but ultimately just jumping down one’s head as Gon and friends lead a stampede. Not really trying, he’s seen failing the phase with everyone else. When Netero shows up Kastiel goes on his phone, deliberately not paying attention to the old man.

Once on Split Mountain, Kastiel is seen jumping down after the main 4 without hesitation, keeping an eye on Gon. Even as the web is about to snap he kept his composure and ultimately got an egg and was lifted by the updrafts. After cooking the egg and seeing Gon give his away, Kastiel offers his to the boy, saying it’s not really for his taste.

A Game at Night

Walking down the hallway of the airship, Kastiel followed applicant #113 to intentionally bump into him. Seeing #113 get aggressive, Kastiel defuses the situation by releasing some bloodlust to intimidate the man. Once away it’s revealed he stole a jeweled necklace from the other applicant.

Kastiel walks further where he meets Gon and Killua who are having a conversation while looking out the window. Kastiel joins and this is where they properly introduce themselves. The blonde explains that he is a thief, leaving out any information about the Phantom Troupe. Once Netero invites them to a game, Kastiel leaves to get some rest, wanting no part.

Third Phase

Once Gon, Killua, Kurapika, and Leorio drop down into the trap doors, Kastiel was already there waiting for 4 others. At this point Kastiel formally introduces himself to Leorio and Kurapika seeing as they’ll be working together and Kurapika noticeably has his guard up. Noticing this Kastiel makes it a goal to get on the blonde’s good side. Once all the watches are on, Lippo explains everything. Through a few majority rules questions, the 5 make their way to the platform set up in the middle of a bottomless abyss where they have to participate in a best of 5 series of matches against long term prisoners. Kastiel takes it upon himself to be the first to fight and his opponent is Bendot who proposes a death match.

Kastiel says he’ll get things done quickly because of the time limit and heads to the platform. Bendot comments that he can’t tell if Kastiel is confident or stupid which the blonde doesn’t reply. Once the match begins Bendot makes the first move which Kastiel dodges and moves behind the taller male. Using Ko, Kastiel infuses his aura into his hand and jumps up, slamming Bendots head into the concrete and crushing his skull. This leaves Kurapika, Gon, and Leorio shocked while Killua seems more wary of Kastiel. Next is Gon’s match which he wins and Kurapika decides to go up for the final win.

During Kurapika’s fight with Majitani, Kastiel is visibly annoyed at the blue male claiming to have been a troupe member and walks away to not pay attention. Though once Kurapika’s eyes turn scarlet, Kastiel has a look of surprise but doesn’t mention it as Kurapika returns. Once it’s revealed that Majitani is still alive and Kurapika has to finish his fight, instead of trying to make Kurapika kill him like Leorio was, Kastiel tells Kurapika to forfeit as they still have 2 other chances to win. Luckily Kurapika agrees to this and Leorio’s match with Leroute takes place. He not only loses the match but 50 hours as well for all of them but luckily Killua wins his matches against Johness for 3 wins.

Once in the waiting room, Kastiel makes it clear how upset he is with Leorio and claims he’d already be done with this phase if he wasn’t being held back by them. After Kastiel has his little spat with Leorio he takes the time to relax and play video games on his phone. Once the 50 hours are up the 5 go through many other obstacles all decided on by majority rules. After they use Gon’s brilliant idea of getting down, Kastiel is the 20th to pass with 6 hours and 47 minutes remaining of the given 72 hours. The 5 weren’t the last as they watched Tonpa pass while being dragged by a woman named Lain (#177) in the last hour.

Fourth Phase

During the Fourth Phase, the remaining examinees are taken to Zevil Island to take part in a 7-day manhunt among themselves to capture each other's number badges. Kastiel’s designed target is Lain. Wanting to get things done quickly Kastiel hides in the bushes near the dock and waits for Lain to come off the ship. Kastiel is very quick in killing Lain and taking the badge #177, making a total of 6 points just on day one.

Later Kastiel is on the phone talking about the exam with Shalnark where he is attacked by Ryu (#34) for his badge. Kastiel refuses and hangs up the call. He deals with Ryu swiftly and takes his badge as well. On the last day Kastiel returns to the dock with all 3 badges and is eligible for the final phase.

Final Phase

The Final Phase of the Hunter Exam is an elimination tournament with a twist—the winner of a match will be removed from the list and receive his very own Hunter License and the loser will be given more chances, depending on their placement in the bracket. After Hanzo and Pokkle’s fight, Kastiel is up against Hisoka who previously forfeited to Kurapika. The two spare for bit without using nen and Hisoka is eventually able to pin down the blonde. Kastiel is about to activate Sweet Tooth when Hisoka smirks and forfeits to him as well, allowing him to become a licensed hunter. After the orientation Kastiel meets up with Gon, Leorio, and Kurapika. He turns down going to Kukuroo Mountain to save Killua but upon hearing what Hisoka told Kurapika, he agrees to meet up with them in Yorknew City.

Heavens Arena arc

During Gon and Killua’s training, it is revealed by Wing that Kastiel had already known Nen before the Hunter Exam along with Hisoka and Illumi.

Kastiel and Chrollo are both mentioned by Machi after healing Hisoka’s wound. She states that if he doesn’t show Chrollo might send his knight after Hisoka as punishment which is presumably Kastiel.

Yorknew City arc

Kastiel is seen sitting next to Chrollo at the Phantom Troupe meeting in an abandoned area of Yorknew City, on his cell phone. As the other members trickle in, Kastiel jumps down and greets them excitedly. Once Chrollo gives the order to steal everything from the Underground Auction he also states that Kastiel will be accompanying them as usual.

At the auction, after Feitan and Franklin’s introduction, Kastiel goes down to the vault only to discover it was empty. He irritatedly gathers the troupe and escapes with them in a hot air balloon. Once in the sky Uvogin suggests the idea of a traitor which Kastiel is iffy on so he tells Uvogin to call Chrollo. After the call Kastiel feels validated and states how he was right to be wary of the idea. When they finally land after being shot down, Kastiel stays on the cliffside with Shalnark, Machi, Shizuku, Nobunaga, Feitan, and Franklin while Uvogin deals with the mafia in Gordeau Desert.

During this time, Kastiel doesn’t pay attention to the fight at all, having full confidence in his comrade and even joins in on Shalnark’s card game. He makes fun of the blonde for his lack in skill at the game but gets interested in the fight as the Shadow Beast come. He smirks proudly but quickly covers his ears at Uvogin’s yell. While the fight is finishing up, Kastiel goes off to the side to start up some of the mafia cars left behind but is left shocked as Uvogin is captured by a chain. He’s unable to see the capturer but use Machi’s nen thread to chase after, jumping out of the stolen car to avoid Owl’s Fun Fun Cloth.

Kastiel and the other spiders easily kill the remaining Shadow Beasts with the exception of Owl. To get Uvogin back, he gets the idea for the some of the troupe members to disguise themselves as mafia men while Kastiel, Feitan, Nobunaga, and Machi take Owl back to the hideout to get the auction treasure and for Chrollo to take his nen ability. The blonde sits next to Chrollo as he surmises that the chain user is either a Manipulator or a Conjuror and that Uvogin is likely to lose. Kastiel seems upset by this knowledge and later into the night he is seen sleeping on Chrollo’s chest while the ravenette reads one of his many books.

On September 3rd, Kastiel helps Chrollo find Neon Nostrade, once she slips away from her bodyguards. He lays across the backseat of a stolen car while Chrollo drives the three to the Cemetery Building. Once there Kastiel leaves Chrollo and Neon and sits at a bar close by. He stays there having a drink until he gets a text from Chrollo to meet him. On his way there he kills some assassins with ease. Kastiel enters as Chrollo’s Indoor Fish disappear. The ravenette reaches his hand out to Kastiel, which he accepts and the two ballroom dance while the other spiders massacre the police and 2000 mafia members guarding the building.

As the massacre continues, both Kastiel and Chrollo are cornered in the basement by Silva and Zeno Zoldyck. While Chrollo focuses on Zeno, Kastiel finds himself after Silva. After a few quick attacks, Silva grabs Kastiel’s foot mid kick and throws him into Chrollo, causing the two to be pinned against a wall by Zeno’s Dragon Lance while Silva throws 2 huge aura spheres at them which triggers a huge explosion. Silva’s transmitter rings and Illumi tells him the 10 dons have been eliminated and Chrollo was the one to hire him. Seeing as the two leaders are no longer their targets Silva and Zeno leave, much to Kastiel’s dismay as wants to continue fighting which Chrollo scoffs at.

Once the other members of the Phantom Troupe join Kastiel and Chrollo inside, they make use of Kortopi’s ability to fool the mafia with fake corpses of Kastiel himself, Chrollo, Shizuku, Shalnark, Machi, and Feitan. Then they take over the Underground Auction and sell copies of the items using Kortopi’s ability. When Kurapika sees the corpses he is left shocked as he realizes Kastiel was a Phantom Troupe leader all along. After everything, Kastiel changes out of his tattered suit into another outfit, using stolen body jewelry from the auction to accessorize and the Troupe celebrates their success.

The following day Chrollo tells the troupe they will leave Yorknew that night but Nobunaga insists on finding the Chain User and also tells him about the boys he captured. After hearing more, Kastiel reasons that the boys are Gon and Killua from the exam and the chain used might be Kurapika. He glares at Hisoka remembering the tip he gave Kurapika in the final phase and accuses him of leaking more information about the troupe. After Chrollo reads Hisoka’s fortune and deducts that Hisoka might be forced to by nen, Kastiel argues that Kurapika didn’t know nen during the exam. An argument is broken up between Kastiel and Hisoka and it’s left at that.

Thanks to a pair of copied Scarlet Eyes sold to the Nostrade Family the night before, they determined Kurapika and the other bodyguards are staying at the Hotel Beitacle. Kastiel goes with Chrollo, Machi, Kortopi, Shizuku, Nobunaga, and Pakunoda to the hotel. On the way there, they notice they are being followed so Chrollo orders Pakunoda, Nobunaga, and Kortopi to go ahead while he stays behind with Kastiel, Machi, and Shizuku. They capture Gon and Killua again and Kastiel gives them a look to tell them they won’t be hurt.

They take the two boys to the hotel and meet up with Pakunoda’s group in the lobby. Kastiel leans against a wall near Chrollo and is stunned as the lights go out and he gets a bit anxious to see his partner missing. He has Pakunoda tell him the contents of the note, leaving out the boy’s memories, as they wait for Kurapika’s call. Kastiel’s phone rings and he and Kurapika have a short exchange.

Once Phinks, Feitan, and Shalnark arrive, Shalnark stresses that they need a plan but Kastiel advises that they just follow Kurapika’s orders. Phinks questions his loyalty which leaves Kastiel offended and he explains that Kurapika cares too much about Gon and Killua to play dirty. After that he leaves with Pakunoda to meet Kurapika and Chrollo at Lingon Airport. Kastiel doesn’t seem to take his eyes off the chained Chrollo as Kurapika lets out some anger in his deceit. After hearing the conditions, both Kastiel and Pakunoda agree and Kurapika uses his Judgment Chain on them.

They return to the airport and Kastiel returns with Pakunoda to the hideout for Gon and Killua and Phinks and Feitan accuse them of being manipulated. Kastiel gets annoyed and argues that he’s just doing what he needs to get Chrollo back and Shalnark confirms that that is the real Kastiel. Gon realizes just how much Kastiel cares for his partner and sees a good side in him. They are finally able to leave as more troupe members stand their ground against Phinks and Feitan.

Kastiel and Pakunoda take Gon and Killua back the airport for a trade off and Kastiel gets extremely irritated seeing Hisoka there and storms inside the airship with Pakunoda and they take off without Hisoka as Kastiel watches the exchange from above, feeling validated for never trusting the magician.

As they return to the hideout Kastiel escorts Illumi out, as he is disguised as Hisoka while Pakunoda is left with the others. Kastiel offers him a position in the troupe to replace Uvogin which Illumi declines saying it’s not the right time. The interaction is cut off as a gunshot is heard inside the hideout and Kastiel rushes inside to find Pakunoda dead. After realizing what happened he goes completely silent and heads to another part of the hideout for privacy. He is then joined by Shalnark who comforts him and lets him know Pakunoda cared about him very deeply and viewed him as a little brother. Kastiel then receives a text from Illumi letting him know he’ll send someone.

Greed Island arc

Kastiel is seen sitting in the hideout nonchalantly playing on his phone when Kalluto enters wanting to join the troupe. Kastiel wonders if this is who Illumi sent and takes Kalluto to a private space to see his nen ability. After the demonstration, Kastiel announces Kalluto as the new #4 of the troupe. After Phinks and Feitan return to the hideout with the game Greed Island, Kastiel asks Shalnark to read aloud of the description. ((Please I literally hate this arc /hj))

Chimera Ant arc

Upon hearing of the Chimera Ant crisis, Kastiel takes Shalnark, Phinks, Feitan, Bonolenov, Shizuku, and Kalluto back to their home, Meteor City, discussing the invasion. The group meets with some of the locals who tell them about the “self-proclaimed Queen” making her nest and how they’re handling the situation. Seeing no immediate progress the Troupe decide to deal with the Chimera Ants themselves and make their way to the nest.

Kastiel takes the lead as they go through the door and makes a deal with the fellow members, claiming that whoever defeats the Queen will be the stand-in “Body” of the Troupe. As they split off, Kastiel wanders aimlessly around the nest, just taking in the scenery. It’s not too long into this stroll that he comes a Chimera Ant named Coi at seemed to have characteristics of a deer. Some banter is displayed between the two, with Kastiel showing off his cockiness. Wanting to make things quick the blonde conjures his candy box and uses his ability Red Hot to set the Ant ablaze and scorch them to death. Once the fight is over Kastiel hears Shalnark’s voice from afar and makes his way over where he sees him captured and talking with Boki. Kastiel doesn’t get involved and watches everything pan out from a distance.

Kastiel reveals himself to Shalnark after everything and comments how it’s always fun to see him use Autopilot. Shalnark replies showing his disdain for the ability since he’s never able to remember what happened during it therefore not feeling really accomplished. Together the two arrive at Feitan’s fight with Zazan. Kastiel comments on her looks only to be extremely taken aback by her transformation, which makes Phinks amused. Kastiel rolls his eyes at Shalnark’s comment of her being Queen and continues to watch the fight. Seeing Feitan activate his Pain Packer, Kastiel runs away with the other members.

The troupe then encounters the transformed Meteor City residents, who all begged to be killed. Kastiel saw no issue in this but was stopped by Phinks who ordered them to show the spirit they have as Meteorites. In the end however the troupe dealt with the transformed residents. Kastiel decides it’s best to stay to make sure no other Ants come but is alerted by Shalnark who receives a text from Nobunaga asking for help. Kastiel explains the job he gave was supposed to be easy and looked to Phinks who was disappointed it wasn’t Chrollo. Kastiel says if Chrollo were to contact anyone it’d obviously be him first only for Phinks to retort that if Kastiel was his partner he’d avoid him as well. Feitan and Shalnark tease Phinks for acting like a girl with a crush and actually being jealous of Kastiel’s relationship with Chrollo and Phinks angrily throws rubble at them making Kastiel laugh to himself.

13th Hunter Chairman Election arc

On August 8th, the first day of the election, Kastiel is one of the 34 absentees and is shown with Chrollo at Heaven’s Arena after having reunited sometime earlier. He complains about all the politics happening and to get his mind off things, Chrollo takes him out on a date for his 25th birthday. While walking around town Kastiel and Chrollo have a deep conversation about their relationship, leading up to Kastiel asking for his hand in marriage, which Chrollo happily agrees to.

Later, Kastiel can be seen watching the livestream provided by the Hunter Association of Leorio punching Ging, sitting in Chrollo’s Heaven’s Arena apartment, giggling to himself. He comments the new Rabbit Zodiac is cute, while in the background Shalnark is shown willingly giving Chrollo his nen ability. When Kastiel is asked why he’s watching the stream he simply replies with “entertainment” and joins the other two men, watching Chrollo successfully take Shalnark’s ability. While Chrollo works on creating his new Nen ability Double Face, Kastiel is seen working on maximizing his own aura output.

Succession Contest arc

After Kastiel watched Chrollo’s fight with Hisoka from afar he flees with his now husband, leaving Shalnark, Kortopi, and Machi to verify Hisoka’s death. While Chrollo is on the phone with Shalnark, Kastiel is next to him with their arms locked as he eats some gummy candy as he overhears the call.

In a crowded area of Tier 5, Kastiel is playing video games on his phone when he notices Chrollo’s mood shifts and hears the stranger’s comment. When he asks Chrollo what’s wrong, he gets no answer as the ravenette takes a moment to himself before taking Kastiel to an area with less people and tells him the news of Shalnark and Kortopi’s deaths. Kastiel is left shocked and speechless at the news, even retorting that Chrollo is lying. But once he realizes the truth he tears up, only fully breaking down once Chrollo reminds him that it’s ok to cry. Breaking the promise he made to himself as a child, Kastiel sobs in Chrollo’s shoulder. Later once Kastiel has calmed down some, still hiccuping, Chrollo gives him Shalnark’s cell phone to hold for the time being.

On the second day of the voyage, Kastiel and Chrollo are seen arguing who will kill Hisoka. Kastiel feels the need to bring justice for Shalnark while Chrollo is out for blood himself, and is a bit fearful of losing Kastiel, even ordering Kastiel to not leave his side while on the ship. The two are stopped as they meet up with Machi who also wants to kill the magician. She proposes a coin toss but Chrollo disregards that idea since both himself and Kastiel, as well as everyone else in the troupe are all after Hisoka. Kastiel then buts in and tells her that Hisoka is certainly on the ship as well and to keep an eye out for him.

In the central dining hall, all current members of the Phantom Troupe meet up where Chrollo reports the search for Hisoka. They conclude that he is not in Tier 5 though the upper tiers are controlled by two other Mafia families. Kastiel turns to Illumi and asks him to introduce himself properly, seemingly pleased that he has decided to join after his offer back in Yorknew city. Though once Illumi states that he is there on Hisoka’s request, the blonde is a bit irritated, which only makes matters worse as a group from the Cha-R Family come over and the leader rudely asks for the troupe to move from their table. Chrollo places a hand on Kastiel’s shoulder to stop him from doing anything before telling the group to find somewhere else instead. The Mafia leader stops his subordinates from engaging and identifies Chrollo and the others as the Phantom Troupe. While the leader talks about the troupe’s rampage in Yorknew City, Kastiel has a proud look plastered on his face and comments how he feels like a celebrity. As Chrollo gets up to leave, going back and forth with the mafia leader, Kastiel just stays close to his side and doesn’t engage, smiling a bit at Chrollo’s cheekiness.

As they walk away Phinks comments how the leader showed his hands as Chrollo mentioned Tier 1. Kastiel also shows interest in this and adds that there could be something valuable there. Chrollo stresses that it’s important to find Hisoka first and kill him, which Kastiel agrees to. As the troupe split up, Kastiel and Chrollo go to leave together when they are stopped by Shizuku and Bonolenov, asking to team up. Chrollo agrees and demands he must be the one to kill Hisoka. Kastiel cuts in and states that he rather take down Hisoka which causes the two to bicker on the topic once again before being stopped by Shizuku. She states she will look for Hisoka in a disguise and Bonolenov states he will transform rather than disguise using his ability Battle Cantabile: Metamorphosen but will need help with his strategy. Chrollo gives him advice and comments that it might be safer for Kastiel to change his appearance as well.

The four head to Tier 4 as Shizuku asks if Chrollo can read their fortunes again, which he explains the ability was missing from his book. Kastiel shows curiosity in Neon's death but dismisses it. Shizuku likens Chrollo’s book to a Death Note and Kastiel laughs and agrees with the notion, teasing his husband. This is where the four are last seen.

Equipment

Twin Knives: Kastiel is always equipped with specialty twin knives that are kept on his belt. They are both the same shape and size with a black handle. The blades are made from Tungsten and are said to be some of the sharpest around.

Smartphone: Kastiel has a standard smartphone that he often uses to communicate to the Troupe, play mobile games on, and visit the dark web. His Home Screen seems to be a selfie of himself and Chrollo as teenagers.

Various Sweets: In the Hunter Exam, Kastiel is seen eating candy from his pockets whenever he’s bored.

Abilities & Powers

Kastiel has all the benefits granted by his status as a Hunter. As a leader of the Phantom Troupe, Kastiel is an exceptional fighter and regarded as one of the strongest by most of its members. Machi ranks him one of the most powerful alongside Chrollo and Feitan. He unlocked his aura when he was only 8 years old and has been training in combat ever since, noted to be a prodigy by his teacher in a flashback. He is able to hold his own against Silva in a 2 on 2 match with Chrollo and Zeno. In the past he has also had an impeccable battle with a previous Zodiac, a nen user heavily trusted by the Hunter Chairman, ultimately defeating and killing them. I’m most battles however, Kastiel shows how skilled he is without his Hatsu, usually going for hand-to-hand combat or using his Twin Knives. Kastiel’s power is only see increasing as the series progresses as he is seen training in Heaven’s Arena alongside Chrollo and often working his strength with other Phantom Troupe members.

Although not one to plan things out and strategize, Kastiel is a very quick thinker and creative with their way of getting things done. Typically coming up for solutions with problems Chrollo didn’t factor into his plans. Kastiel is well-versed in gymnastics and acrobatics making his fighting style very airy, quick, and precise. He is very skilled in dodging attacks and pinpoint weak spots on his targets.

Preternatural Perception: Kastiel has animal like instincts being able to sense when others are following him even using Zetsu. He displayed this on the train in Yorknew, sensing Melody on the same cart and texting Chrollo such.

Enhanced Strength: Kastiel is ranked fifth in arm-wrestling among the Troupe which is quite impressive given Conjurers can only use 60% percent of Enhancement. He is even physically stronger than Fetain, a natural Transmuter. He is the brawn’s of the two Phantom Troupe leaders and definitely displays as such, even being able to crush Bendot’s skull with ease.

Immense Speed and Reflexes: Kastiel is seen moving so fast he can disappear from sight at a single leap. He’s able to attack Bendot and Lain before they can even react. During his fight with the Zoldycks he’s able to get close and jump around Silva, dodging most of his attacks with ease while remaining on the offensive.

Enhanced Agility: Given his skill in gymnastics, Kastiel is very flexible and light on his feet. His advances are often unpredictable in his movements, usually having the upper hand. He is seen running alongside buildings and jumping horizontally from one to another. His fighting style also incorporates a lot of cartwheels and flips.

Advanced Hearing: Kastiel has a keener sense of hearing than average humans, which enables him to perceive revelatory sounds and eavesdrop on conversations others would miss.

Genius-level Intellect: Kastiel is a very quick thinker, coming up with solutions on the spot for the Phantom Troupe on jobs. He also very knowledgeable in mathematics, which correlates with his problem solving abilities. He is shown to be very intuitive and easily able to assess people and manipulate them as seen with Kurapika.

Master Hand-to-Hand Combatant: Kastiel’s offense is top class, and is often regarded as Chrollo’s Knight. He is seen holding out on Nen, having more fun in showing off his skills and strength during a match. He also has impeccable defensive abilities allowing him to close in on opponents without much worry of injury.

Proficient Weapon Specialist: Kastiel is seen using his twin knives with a great amount of skill and ease. He can throw them at far distances with amazing precise aim. He’s also stated as not being bad with a gun either. Given his interest in torture he also alluded to being well versed in other weaponry.

Nen

Kastiel is a Conjurer, a Nen user that can create objects out of thin air. His aura is powerful yet subduedly sinister, like a wolf in sheep’s clothing. His bloodlust especially can be intense as seen when he first learns Chrollo has been kidnapped, and when he learns of Shalnark’s death. He is said by Silva to be a very skilled Nen user, especially for his young age. Kastiel’s ability, Sweet Tooth, gives him a plethora of different sub-abilities in the form of a candy box, all of which he has mastered to fit his fighting style. Despite being a Conjurer, these abilities range in Transmutation, Enhancement, and Manipulation. Thought seems to be more well-versed in Transmutation and Enhancement rather than the latter as Cotton Candy Clouds seems to be the ability he dislikes using the most.

His affinity for Transmutation allows him to use his ability Red Hot with ease, even tricking Coi into thinking he was a natural Transmuter. His Zetsu is described as flawless by Hisoka, stating that Chrollo has asked him tail other Nen users on multiple occasions, including himself. Like other skilled Nen users, Kastiel is capable if maintaining a state of Ten at all times. His use of Ren also indicates he can use Ken as well. He is seen using Ko and Shu in Trick Tower, and Gyo during his confrontation with Kurapika at Lingon Airport. He also has knowledge of En and In. Though Kastiel doesn’t seem to rely on his his Hatsu so much, always trying to fight with his knives first before using his ability.

Kastiel is ranked fifth in arm-wrestling, that is still very impressive given Conjurers can only use 60% of Enhancement skills, showing that he as pushed those abilities a lot. He is very perceptive of other’s aura and Nen abilities though will still take on anyone even if deem stronger.
