Working for Stronger Protections for Otters at CITES

in Central and West Africa, Wildlife Trade

In May 2019, Born Free will attended the Conference of the Parties (CoP) of the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES) in Sri Lanka. CITES is an international agreement between governments, aimed at ensuring that international trade in specimens of wild animals and plants does not threaten their survival. The CoP18 meeting will provide an opportunity for Born Free to advocate for new and greater CITES protections for wildlife species. This CoP, Born Free and other wildlife groups are working for protections for two Asian otter species that are increasingly trafficked for their skins and the illegal exotic pet trade.
