Visiting a person’s workspace is like taking a peek inside their brain. Whether it’s at home or in an art studio, Nice Work explores where creative people do all of their, well, creating—so that you can steal their on-the-clock style.

Name: Sade Mims

Occupation: Artist, designer and owner of EDAS

What time I start: 9 a.m. and sometimes 10 because I take my time.

What time I clock out: 6 p.m. Monday through Thursday, and 4 on the weekends.

How I get to work: The Subway.

Three words that describe my space: Playful, eclectic, and considered.

The most important thing in my office/studio: Our modular wood pegboard. It’s the focal point of the showroom and displays the most merchandise.

What’s on the walls: Some original paintings done by me, and the pegboard that I designed, which was made by Noah Payne (he also made our colorful display table).

My current creative fuel: Collecting old magazines. It’s a great way to know pop culture from the past and see what stories were relevant in the art, culture and music world back then. I am collecting everything from Trace, to Evergreen to Vibe. I miss the gratification that journalism gave me growing up and the deep stories told then, so it’s inspiring to indulge in work that mimics how I want my brand to feel.

What I turn to when I’m stuck: Music. I’m listening to a lot of Pink Siifu, Bahamadia, Mick Jenkins, D’Angelo, and Keiyaa to get me by these days. They each are different but speak the same language in a way. I love blending old-school sounds and finding new age artists to merge into my sountracks when listening to music; it’s a reminder of my old and new spirit.

How I stay organized: I am still mastering this. But I start my day with a to-do list every morning, and that is extremely helpful.

Favorite pen: The pen from my family’s business. My grandfather owned a funeral home that my aunt operates and runs and the pens they give to clients just work so well and I love that old school memorabilia approach to marketing.

Best notebook: My mint green LEUCHTTURM1917 notebook.

Technology I can’t live without: My speakers and headphones.

Desk chair that I could (and do) spend hours in: My suar wood hand chair that I always paint in. It makes me feel powerful.

How I fight the 3pm slump: Most times I don’t fight it and I lean into what my body is saying. But if it’s something urgently needing to be done, I’ll turn on some music that is more upbeat and lyrically invigorating to get me in the zone.

Ideal office snack: Pretzels and peppermint tea. I love my Japanese tea cup set because it’s made of cast iron, so it stays hot for a while. Tea keeps me alert (non caffeinated) and the art of drinking tea keeps me on my toes. I also feel it’s quite romantic.

Preferred soundtrack: Of Course it’s our EDAS playlist.
