Grandson Of Adventurer Jacques Cousteau Launches Cannabis Brand

A new company blending the rejuvenating properties of seaweed, kelp and algae with the healing benefits of cannabis launched on Wednesday with the rollout of a line of topicals and edibles in California, the nation’s largest legal marijuana market. Co-founded by legendary marine adventurer Jacques Cousteau’s grandson Philippe and his wife Ashlan, SeaWeed Naturals promises to help restore the globe’s oceans while providing premium cannabis wellness products to its customers.

“The healing properties of cannabis and the superpowers of seaweed and algae-based Omega 3s are a mighty combination,” Ashlan Cousteau writes in an email. “When applied topically, seaweed and kelp have been proven to hydrate, minimize fine lines, promote collagen production, boost radiance, help relieve inflammation in skin, and reduce aging from environmental aggressors like pollution. When ingested, seaweed is a superfood and Omega 3 amino acids derived from algae have been proven to improve the health of your skin, organs, joints and bones, and crucially—your brain.”

Ashlan explains that she was first introduced to the healing properties of cannabis after giving birth to the couple’s first child. Having trouble sleeping, she turned to a friend (and now SeaWeed Naturals co-founder Jill Belasco) who introduced her to nighttime cannabis gummies with melatonin.

“I was finally able to sleep and wake up feeling refreshed and not groggy,” Ashlan remembers.

Philippe’s first experience with cannabis as medicine came when he was having pain due to an old shoulder injury. After he tried a THC body balm, Ashlan says they were again “floored by the results.”

“We now have our family, friends and colleagues using cannabis for aches, pains, inflammation, stress relief, help sleeping and more,” she adds. “It truly is a wonder plant. And combined with the healing powers of seaweed, algae and kelp it's miraculous.”

Wellness Products Created From Cannabis And The Sea

SeaWeed Natural’s innovative cannabis topical and edible formulations contain marine botanicals including seaweed and algae extracts. The product line includes two varieties of 100% vegan gummies, High Tide with Sativa cannabinoids and Low Tide with Indica cannabinoids and melatonin, an offering modeled off the formula that originally helped Ashlan. Topicals include two body balms, one with a CBD to THC ratio of 3:1 and the other 1:3, a comfort oil and lip balm. Two different oral tinctures, one with 30:1 CBD to THC and the other 1:20, are also available.

Committed environmentalists, Ashlan and Philippe Cousteau have dedicated their lives to ocean conservation and sustainability. SeaWeed Naturals products are made with ocean botanicals sourced from seaweed farms that combat climate change by naturally sequestering carbon, de-acidify the water, create habitats for ocean life and provide sustainable jobs. Fish-free Omega 3s are derived from algae that was initially discovered and isolated from the pristine coastal waters of the Bay of Fundy in Nova Scotia and are now sustainably cultivated through a fermentation process similar to kombucha.

SeaWeed Naturals has also made a financial commitment to support the environment by dedicating 5% of all proceeds to marine life conservation organizations including EarthEcho International and AltaSea to help secure a better future for the world’s oceans.

“EarthEcho International is a non-profit organization founded in 2005 by Philippe Cousteau in honor of his father Philippe Cousteau Sr., son of the legendary explorer Jacques-Yves Cousteau. EarthEcho’s mission is to build a global youth movement to protect and restore our ocean planet,” Ashlan Cousteau explains. “We collaborate with youth around the world to provide knowledge and develop tools to drive meaningful and durable environmental action to protect and restore our ocean planet. Reaching more than 2 million people in 146 countries, we activate the next generation to become environmental leaders who will transform the future.”

SeaWeed Naturals new products are available online and at select licensed cannabis retailers in California. The company also plans a line of CBD-only products that will be available nationwide beginning next year.
