Humanist Beauty // Jennifer Norman

Humanist Beauty believes in doing better and being better. Crated by Jennifer Norman, this line of beauty care is created to support all races, all skin types, and abilities, and all genders. Inspired by sacred rituals, natural elements, and herbal remedies, Jennifer set to create a line that is infused with as much glow as possible.

Jennifer makes all of her own formulas from scratch, and will never cut corners when it comes to the quality and wholesomeness of the ingredients they use. Every single ingredient used in every single product is carefully scrutinized for benefit, safety, and ethical sourcing. All of her Herban Wisdom™ formulas are EWG Verified, certified to be among the safest in the beauty industry. She also uses the most environmentally conscientious packaging options she can — post-consumer recycled paper-based packaging for shipping materials and they do not use plastic void fill or shipping tape. Also, her products all have a brail ring on them, so that those with limited vision can also use the products safely. It’s all of these details that make Humanist Beauty so special.

Jennifer has a background of 2 decades in the beauty industry, but she wanted to create her own line made with more intention and purpose. As if the universe was listening, she was gifted that purpose through her son, who was diagnosed with a rare genetic disorder at the age of two. She dedicated herself to his care and studied up on various aspects of health and wellness to help him thrive. Through this research of ancient herbal remedies, alternative therapies, energy healing and modern advancements, she was inspired to create her own line.

As she introduces Humanist Beauty to the world, she wants to share this message: “Regardless of who you are, or where you came from, or what you look like, or what abilities you have…you matter. And YOU are beautiful. And Humanist Beauty is for you.”

Los Angeles, CA

WHEN YOU’RE EATING HEALTHY, WHAT IS A TYPICAL…

BREAKFAST: A homemade smoothie made with mixed berries, sugar-free frozen acai, avocado, almond milk, collagen powder, protein powder, cacao, ashwagandha, and monk fruit sweetener. And black coffee.
LUNCH: A colorful salad topped with pole-caught albacore tuna.
DINNER: Rotisserie chicken with kimchee and mixed vegetables.
SNACK: Almonds, wasabi peas, organic coconut keto clusters. I definitely lean towards savory snacks over sweet ones.

WHAT ARE YOUR FAVORITE SPOTS/RESTAURANTS TO EAT HEALTHY?

Juicy Ladies, True Food Kitchen, Urban Plates, Sweetfin Poke, Little Brothers Sushi

WHAT ARE YOUR FAVORITE INDULGENCES?

Getting a really good massage. Also sound baths, live music, and sleeping in.

WHAT ARE YOUR FAVORITE SPOTS/RESTAURANTS TO INDULGE?

Holden Zalma, owner of MetaTouch Body Balance, is an amazing massage therapist. He even does house calls.
If I feel like going off keto and enjoying some great Italian food, The Factory Kitchen and Bestia are the places to do it.
I haven’t been able to attend sound baths or live music events in a while due to pandemic restrictions, and some of my favorite places unfortunately closed down. I’m looking forward to lifted restrictions so we can have larger group gatherings once again.

WHAT WOULD BE YOUR LAST MEAL ON EARTH?

Anything made or recommended by my dear friend, restauranteur Adam Fleischman. He’s an amazing chef, mixologist, and wine connoisseur.

WHAT ARE THE BEST DISHES YOU COOK/ YOUR FAVORITE RECIPES?

I love cooking for big groups and festive gatherings. I’m usually the Thanksgiving and Christmas dinner host. Some favorites recipes include mussels with parsley and garlic, uptown down-home chili, grilled ribeye steaks with sauteed mushrooms, and a baked clam dip recipe passed down from my mom.

WHERE DO YOU GROCERY SHOP?

Ralphs, Costco and Sprouts are my usuals. Occasionally I go to Trader Joe’s and Whole Foods.

TOP 3 ITEMS YOU ALWAYS HAVE IN YOUR KITCHEN?

Dark roast coffee, garlic powder, olive oil.

WHAT IS YOUR FITNESS REGIMEN? (how often & what you do)

I used to go to Equinox for fitness, yoga and cardio classes, but I haven’t been able to during the pandemic. So lately I’ve been stretching, practice yoga and using the elliptical machine 2-3 times per week. I also jog and hike every other week.

WHAT PROFESSIONAL BEAUTY/HEALTH/FITNESS/SPIRITUAL GURUS DO YOU SWEAR BY?

I don’t swear by any one beauty expert, because I believe beauty comes from within, and I believe outer beauty is completely self-defined and personal.

Similarly, I don’t follow any one health or fitness expert. I’ve dabbled in so many health and fitness fads in the past that have not worked for my system or that have been difficult to maintain. Ultimately, through trial and error, I discovered what works best for my body and my compliance over time. For me, eating keto and migrating toward stretching, resistance and light cardio a few times a week have been best.

There are spiritual guides that I find compelling in their own ways, including Eckhart Tolle, Deepak Chopra, Jay Shetty, Michael Beckwith, and Shaman Durek. I wouldn’t swear by any of them though, because I tend to assimilate spiritual guidance from a number of places, form my own beliefs, and forge my own personal connection with God. I would say that my beliefs are predominantly Buddhist with Christianity and Hinduism splashed in.

TOP 3 FAVORITE SONGS?

Plush - Stone Temple Pilots

Breathe - Angels and Airwaves

E-Brake - SomeKindaWonderful

MOST-WATCHED MOVIE?

Grease (I probably watched this a hundred times as a child)

MOST LIFE-CHANGING BOOK?

A New Earth by Eckhart Tolle

FAVORITE SHOPS/BOUTIQUES?

I love strolling Abbott Kinney in Venice, CA. There are such great boutiques all along that stretch. I went on a shopping boycott for over a year where I stopped buying anything fashion-oriented for myself, so I can’t say that I have any current favorite places right now. I prefer to window shop and if I do buy, I like to support B Corp and eco-sustainable brands.

COOLEST PLACE YOU’VE EVER VISITED?

I went with some girlfriends to Bodrum Turkey many years ago. We took a small plane from Istanbul over to Bodrum. While we were there exploring, we met some locals with a yacht who invited us to sail along the Aegean with them while they caught and grilled fresh fish for us. Then we went out dancing every night. It was magical. \

I also really loved visiting Capri, Italy, for a totally breathtaking Mediterranean experience.

FAVORITE HOTELS?

Being part of the Global Wellness Institute, I have learned about the hotels that are doing their part to promote real wellness, nature conservation, and sustainability in all their hospitality operations. Any hotel designed by Bill Bensley and also Six Senses Hotels are absolute standouts.

WHAT IS THE BEST GIFT YOU’VE EVER RECEIVED?

I received a rescue puppy for my birthday one year. She was a scruffy brown chihuahuaterrier mix. I named her Mochi. She appears in every SuperCaptainBraveman children’s book I write.

MOST PROFOUND HEALING EXPERIENCE YOU’VE EVER HAD?

I attended a prolific two-night ayahuasca ceremony with members of the Yawanawa Amazonian tribe. I set intentions for the experience, and the journey helped to unveil all the answers I was seeking.

WHO ARE YOUR MOST TRUSTED HEALERS?

I believe we are our own healers. We can talk through issues and undergo energy work to reveal pathways to activate healing, but ultimately, true healing is up to us alone – mind, body and soul.

Among my friends, Anna Naturalista and Ginger Nelson are gifted with healing intuition and channeling, and Ella Vong is gifted in her knowledge of healing plant medicine. I also recommend Candace Veach of One Spirit Acupuncture for physical healing.

WHAT IS THE BIGGEST LEARNING EXPERIENCE YOU’VE HAD TO FACE AND WHAT DID YOU TAKE AWAY FROM IT?

When my son was two years old, he fell into a coma for three months. During that time, he was diagnosed with a very rare genetic disorder for which there was no cure, and the prognosis was bleak. Before that time, there was so much that I took for granted. I learned that, frankly, just being alive and breathing is such a gift. And most things that stress us out in our lives are really worth worrying about.

Once I made the decision to hold onto hope, my son started waking up. He wasn’t expected to live past three years old. In April he just celebrated his 15th birthday.

Over the past 13 years, I learned the true power of love and positivity. These forces enable us to move mountains for those we care about. It attracts supportive energy and goodness. It heals beyond measure.

Today, I’m a single mom, and my son still requires highly involved care 24 hours of every day. So meditating, understanding my limits, asking for and getting help when I need it, taking mental and physical breaks, and being grateful for my life and all its lessons have transformed my entire human existence.

DESCRIBE YOUR PERFECT DAY.

My perfect day would involve waking up late, kissing and hugging my son, spending time in the freshness of nature, eating delicious food, drinking delicious wine, and listening to glorious music through sunset.

WHAT IS YOUR MOST VALUABLE GLOW TIP/SECRET?

Understanding that your happiness is eternally within you. Abundant joy and giving as much love as you can to others makes every human glow.

FAVORITE QUOTE?

“The meaning of life is to find your gift. The purpose of life is to give it away.” – Pablo Picasso

WHAT ARE YOU GRATEFUL FOR?

I’m grateful that I’ve discovered my life’s purpose, which is to be a vessel of compassion.

WHAT MAKES YOU GLOW?

Doing the work to balance my chakras so that all my energy centers are in harmonious alignment emanates considerable glow.
