Story

“Mountain wonderkid Frankie is climbing to Everest Base Camp at just EIGHT years old – and helping poorly children Make A Wish.”

You might remember Frankie from national television and newspapers just a few months ago. Back in September, he broke international records as the youngest Briton ever to summit the highest point of majestic Mount Olympus, at the age of just seven – raising thousands of pounds for the Wasdale Mountain Rescue Team as he did so.

Now he’s moving mountains again and pulling his fundraising boots back on – but this time his sights are set even higher! Just two months after turning EIGHT, Frankie is hiking right into the heart of the Himalayas on a 12-day trek to reach very-almost the top of the world, at an ear-popping 5,364 metres (17,598 feet).

For context, that’s roughly six Scafell Pikes on top of each other…and Scafell Pike is England’s highest mountain!

Tackling what is perhaps the world’s most famous and ambitious trek, Frankie will climb with his mum Basia, a qualified mountain leader in the UK. Together they will enter a (literally) breathtaking world of glaciers, lakes and the highest peaks on earth.

He will acclimatise to the altitude as he goes more than halfway up Mount Everest, in order to stay safe and well. And he will rely heavily on his extensive mountain fitness and experience – including all 214 Wainwrights in the Lakes, and of course his record-breaking climb of Olympus.

Climbing Everest is Frankie’s biggest dream. It’s even the wallpaper beside his bed. But being only small, he’s settling for Base Camp, itself a really tough challenge physically and mentally! As far as we can find out, he’ll be one of only a handful of children ever to have gone there.

And because he’s making his dream come true, Frankie wants to help other children make wishes come true despite suffering critical conditions.

The Make-A-Wish foundation in the UK brings moments of joy to children whose lives are limited or even threatened by serious illness. Those moments of joy create amazing memories for them and their loved ones to cherish even as their lives are changed for ever, and a chance to forget about the worry and disruption of their illness, just for a while.

Frankie wants to raise £5,364 – a pound for every metre of height to reach Base Camp – to help critically ill children aged 3-17 make a wish come true. We hope you will help him to help them.

If you want to know a bit more about Frankie, you can learn more on his Facebook page “Frankie Moves The Mountains” or on Basia’s mountain walks page “Hills and Skills”. Or just Google “Frankie climbs Mount Olympus” for plenty of stories!
