BOSTON — Leadership Brainery (LB) is pleased to announce that Themis Bar Review has become a founding sponsor of Dear Future Colleague, LB’s online mentorship and recruitment platform. Themis will provide nearly $70,000 in scholarships for bar preparation courses to reduce the financial burden on law students from underrepresented backgrounds who are pursuing legal sector jobs. The collaboration will also incentivize current law students who mentor prospective law students from underrepresented backgrounds through Dear Future Colleague with $250 discounts on Themis bar preparation courses.
These scholarships and discounts exist for two urgent reasons:
To increase the bar passage rates of underrepresented law students by reducing the financial barriers to preparation tools and support.
To increase diversity and representation in law schools and the workforce through mentorship, recruitment, and technology-based resources.
According to the American Bar Association, 85% of all lawyers are white, while only 60% of U.S. residents are white. Nearly all people of color are underrepresented in the legal profession compared with their presence in the U.S. population. For example, only 5% of all lawyers are African American, 5% are Hispanic, 2% are Asian, and less than one-half of 1% are Native American.
“Upon learning about Leadership Brainery and Dear Future Colleague, we lept at the opportunity to support an organization that aims to provide equitable opportunities to underrepresented students,” said Themis Bar Review COO, Richard Douglas. “Themis is thrilled to help provide resources for these students and their mentors.”
Scholarship Eligibility Requirements:
Mentor a prospective law student on Dear Future Colleague for at least three months.
Be a currently enrolled 2L, 3L, or recent law school graduate.
Identify as a person of color, LGBTQ+, low-income, or the first in their family to earn a bachelor’s degree.
Current cumulative grade point average of 3.0 or higher.
Able to demonstrate a financial need.
Application Process:
Apply here if eligible. Submit a 3-5 minute video or 500-word minimum statement sharing your background, need for the scholarship, and how you will use your law degree to foster greater equity in society.
Application Deadline:
Applications are accepted and reviewed on a rolling basis until all scholarships are awarded.
