About us

The Anti-Recidivism Coalition’s mission is to reduce incarceration, improve the outcomes of formerly incarcerated individuals, and to build healthier communities. The Anti-Recidivism Coalition (ARC) seeks to accomplish this Mission in a three-fold approach: (1) to advocate for fair and just policies that: reduce crime, decrease the use of incarceration, and serve the needs and well-being of formerly incarcerated people; (2) to provide services and resources to rebuild broken men and women affected by the criminal justice system that improves outcomes; and (3) to build healthier communities by returning motivated, mentally prepared, and high character men and women from incarceration to crime ridden neighborhoods to serve as ambassadors for change. In brief, ARC is a support network, a connection to services and support, and an advocate for just and fair policies.

  • Recently we held a graduation for our first-ever San Bernardino Second Chance Apprenticeship Readiness Program! Expanding our flagship workforce program to more counties across the state is one of our top priorities at ARC. Thank you to @bluemeridian for helping to make this possible. And congratulations to the 23 members of San Bernadino's Cohort 1, who completed curriculum approved by the National Building Trades, OSHA 10, First Aid and CPR! We're so excited for your futures and for the many graduates yet to come! #ARC #SecondChances #Workforce

  • Happy Mother's Day, especially to incarcerated mothers and the mothers of incarcerated children! ARC was outside of Barry J Nidorf Juvenile Hall and Los Padrinos Juvenile Hall handing out gift bags to moms who visited their incarcerated children on Mother's Day. We partnered with Hang Out do Good - our new friends - on this initiative! We also delivered bags to the caregivers of Till Your Mom Gets Home participants- lots of LOVE from ARC to the community this weekend!

🎉 Exciting News! 🎉 We're thrilled to announce that ARC's Norma Cumpian has been reappointed as the Board and State Community Corrections  (BSCC) Commissioner! Norma brings a profound understanding of the challenges of incarceration and how conditions inside carceral facilities shape individuals' dignity and future. As a formerly incarcerated person, Norma's insights will be instrumental in driving policies focused on promoting dignity and safety for incarcerated individuals. A huge thank you to Governor Gavin Newsom and the California Senate for recognizing Norma's expertise and confirming her for this crucial role! Congratulations again, Norma. We are all better off under your leadership!

  • “I am proof of the power of a second chance.” Read Sam Lewis's op-ed in Newsweek, where he shares his journey of redemption and how 2nd chances give needed opportunities to formerly incarcerated people “Second Chance Month has come to an end, but our commitment to supporting second chances doesn't have to stop. My story, and the stories of the people I work with every day, demonstrate growth, accountability, and giving back. I hope we'll translate our belief in redemption into action and resolve to give more Americans a second chance." https://lnkd.in/ghnWVnit

Each year Anti-Recidivism Coalition (ARC) serves young people both inside and out of the justice system. Their programming has resulted in a drastic drop in recidivism rates within their graduating cohorts, 55% lower than the national average at only 10%.   One of the reasons, a majority of ARC’s staff were formerly incarcerated, including their Executive Director. ARC’s staff are experts of their own experience. Nicholas is a shining example.   He accessed ARC’s services after serving an 11-year sentence, became an intern, and recently gained full-time employment on their communications team. Now, he works everyday as an advocate and storyteller for his community.   The Schultz Family Foundation invests in organizations like ARC creating meaningful opportunities for young people exiting the justice system. ARC serves more young people during their reentry process than any other organization in Los Angeles. Less than 10% of ARC graduates recidivate, 55% less than the local average. When our team first met Nicholas he said, “my story is just a drop in a pool of stories like mine”. He’s right. In California alone our partner Anti-Recidivism Coalition (ARC) reports that approximately 50,000 youth under the age of 25 cycle through the L.A. County jail system each year. Every time one of those young people is released, they face nuanced challenges during their transition to civilian life. Nicholas sees himself as an advocate for each of them. As the Storytelling and Content Associate at ARC, Nicholas creates content humanizing his formerly incarcerated community while spotlighting ARC’s work to end mass incarceration in California.
