From selling video cassettes to making movies with the same film stars whose cassettes he sold - here’s how jayantilal Gada started Pen India Limited, one of India’s leading film production and distribution companies.   ▶ Started work at his father’s grocery shop:   Born in 1962 in a village in Gujarat, Gada got involved with his father in running their small grocery shop after 10th grade.   He simultaneously also completed courses in radio repairing and photography since he realized he couldn’t make a career out of running a grocery shop.   ▶ Starting a video library after passing 10th grade:   Gada started a video library in a small section of his father’s shop. His father didn’t like it initially, but he didn’t give up and continued with it.   He rented video cassettes & did video photography for weddings as it turned out to be a decent revenue earner.   ✔ With the money he made, Gada started his own video library with the name - 'Popular Video Cassette Company' which sold video cassettes in wholesale.   ▶ On the verge of bankruptcy, yet kept the spirit high:   Gada took the next big step & did deals with film distributors to buy the copyrights of films and market them. He did all this before he turned 25! To make it big in the distribution and marketing field he took loans. Unfortunately, he almost became bankrupt as he couldn’t pay back the loan. But, he didn’t lose heart.   ▶ Rising from the ashes like a Phoenix:   Gada started all over again & renamed his company Popular Entertainment Network (PEN).   This time, he decided to bypass the middlemen – the distributors and take the copyrights of films directly from the film producers. There was no looking back from here on!   ▶ The Biggest Turning Point in his career- “Sholay” and "Mahabharat”   When Gada showcased Sholay, he showed commercial ads in between to make money. The craze of this movie resulted in a record TRP of revenue ~$1 mn in the 1980s!!   ✔ He also produced Mahabharat (2013) with a whopping budget of $ 7.5 mn and it won the Best Animation Film award. Today, PEN has produced blockbusters like RRR, Gangubai, etc. Recently had the pleasure of meeting him and discussing his journey. Jayantilal's story is a true example of how an industry like Bollywood can be dominated with no prior track record, but sheer smart and hard work. Agree?
