  • The force is with you. ✨ For many Star Wars fans, it relates to their life in so many ways. Who doesn’t love adorable, witty droids, good triumphing over evil, and rich storytelling that spans decades? 🤷♀️ Our founder, Sam, relates to Star Wars for all of that and more—she was even born on May 4th (a.k.a. Star Wars Day). 🎂 Star Wars highlights some themes that are very relevant in today’s political climate: 👉🏻 Fear as a motivator to gain power. 👉🏼 Authoritarianism thrives when hope is lost. 👉🏽 The majority wants democracy and abortion rights. 👉🏾 Together we are powerful. 👉🏿 Collectively, our actions make a difference. No matter your inspiration, we must find it, share it, and embrace it. We need a whole lot of hope in a world that can sometimes feel hopeless. ❤️ What gives you hope? 💫 [Image descriptions below.] #Empowerment #SocialChange #SocialJustice #StarWars #GeekCulture #TheResistance #MayThe4thBeWithYou

  • This is a plastic world, we’re just surviving in it. 🫠 Plastic has taken over our lives, even if we don’t see it (hello, microplastics). 🔍 We need to come together to hold corporations and governments accountable. Our society encourages rapid consumption. Late stage capitalism is all about making things cheap and convenient, which means constantly buying new and throwing away the old. 😣 We need to do what we can individually, while pushing for accountability and change collectively. ✨ We learned a lot in April about Plastics. Did you learn something new? 📚 [Image descriptions: All backgrounds are brown with a plastic texture. There is the Roots of Change logo and social handle at the bottom. (1) “Here is the good and bad news about plastics.” (2) “Bad news: plastics harm everyone.” (3) “Good news: plastics harm everyone.” (4) “Why is that good news. Because they harm everyone, there is a greater chance to rally more people—and people already generally know they want less plastics in their lives.” (5) A graph showing the “Overwhelming Supports for Banning Single-Use Plastics” across 12 countries. It shows the global average in share of respondents in selected countries who agree that unnecessary single-use plastics should be banned is 85%. The chart is from Statista. (6) “What can we do. We live in a plastics world and it’s impossible to escape it. Do what you can personally, while building momentum collectively. Advocate for regulation, develop an off-ramp plan for deplasticization, and turning toward longer-term, more sustainable products.” (7) “Learn more. You can read more about plastics in April’s Plastic series and how it is impacting our world. If you learned something new:” there are icons to show option on how to engage.] #SayNoToPlastic #ClimateAction #SaveThePlanet #StopFossilFuels #Microplastics

  • Our littlest big problem. 👀 Microplastics are a problem. The worst part is, we are just starting to understand how ingrained they are already are in our environment. 🫠 And, spoiler alert: it isn’t a good thing. 😬 For April, we broke down the plastics industry, how we got here, and what we can do about it. 📝 We learned so much. • We weren’t told the truth about plastics. 📣 The plastic crisis that we are in was foreseen for decades, but there was an active effort by the plastics industry to cover it up, misinform the public, and lobby for solutions that they knew would not work. 👀 The disinformation that they spread about recycling plastics not only hurts us and our planet but also interferes with the use of mostly recyclable materials like aluminum and glass. 🥫 This month, we’ve been covering the history of plastics and how we got here. 📚 If you enjoy learning about social change and are a heart-first human, join us. ❤️ [Image descriptions: (1) A photo of Earth covered with a clear plastic wrap. To the right of the Earth it says, “Plastic Kills” in creepy dark green letters. “and the plastic industry knew it.” in regular sans serif font. (2) Clear plastic wrap covers the entire background. At the top is says, “How do we know they knew?” “Recycling cannot go on indefinitely, and does not solve the solid waste problem.” —Founding Director of the Vinyl Institute, 1989, with a grey trashcan on the right. “While some day this may be a reality, it is more likely that we are not going to recycle our way out of this solid waste issue.” —Plastic Company Representative Speaking About Recycling, 1994, with a black trash bag on the left. “We are committed to the activities [of plastics recycling], but not committed to the results.” —Exxon Employee, 1994, with a figure of a person putting paper into a waste bin. (3) “Why aren’t more plastics recycled? There are three options for recycling them: standard recycling, incineration, and chemical recycling.” There is smoke in the background. (4) “So, recycling doesn’t work?!” Next to a red “x,” “Recycling plastic doesn’t work as easily as they want us to think. Next to a green check mark, “Recycling aluminum and glass works quite well!” (5) “We need to say ‘no’ to plastics.
