Prison Book Bans and Censorship

Prison Book Bans & Censorship

Wednesday, May 17
6 - 7 PM ET / 3 - 4 PM PT
via Zoom
Live captioning provided

Currently, there is widespread book banning and censorship happening in many jails, prisons, and detention centers across the United States.  Not only are facilities banning specific book titles, they are also banning entire subjects.  Plus, many facilities have adopted policies that are tantamount to an entire book ban, since they prohibit all books except for one purchased new (at full price) from a specific distributor.  Add to that the lack of libraries and access to educational resources, and people incarcerated are left without any access to books and reading material.  This will explore various book bans across the United States, their implications for people incarcerated, and some ways people have been challenging these bans.

Presenters: Midwest Books to Prisoners volunteers Jacqueline Spreadbury and Jeremy Hammond will be presenting at this event. Jacqueline is a graduating member of UIC Law NLG Chapter and Jeremy is a formerly incarcerated advocate for incarcerated peoples' rights.

Co-sponsored by Midwest Books to Prisoners
