In Conversation with Joe Cardillo

Hi Yโ€™all! ๐Ÿ‘‹๐Ÿฝ

I am back to talk with social change communicator, Joe Cardillo (they/them), to talk about navigating social change and communications in our fragmented and profit-driven tech world.

Joe has an amazing perspective about communications and branding and how we can reshape our world through those mediums. As our tech landscape has incentivized inauthentic behavior, we discussed how organizations and movements can overcome disintermediation, disinformation, and the enshitification of the Internet.

โ€œI think a lot about the phrase enthusiastic consent, which is a phrase that kind of comes from, you know, educators who teach about, you know, relationships and intimacy and sex and things like that. But it's a great phrase for us as communicators to be thinking about because When we have essentially non-consensual relationships with our communities, audiences, customers, users, we also don't have very good data about what's meaningful to them, which means we can't really create things that are useful or valuable or that they connect with either. So it creates this self-repeating loop. And so it matters a lot to be thinking about those kinds of things.โ€ - Joe Cardillo

We also discussed:

  • How โ€˜Discoveryโ€™ has been taken over by capitalist, profit-driven thought and how we can shift to a humanized strategic approach.
  • Building relationships outside of extractive fundraising
  • Getting sucked into oversimplification and the Alexa-fying of our movements
  • Enthusiastic Consent - rethinking relationships with mass communications
  • The relief of unsubscribing to bad political emails and why Iโ€™m still subscribed to AOC and Corrie Bushโ€™s listserv.

I hope you enjoy our conversation!
