9 Reasons to Consider an Indy Pass

Updated: Apr 7, 2022

Last updated 3/2/22

The Indy Pass is here to stay and as it unveils details for the 2022-23 season, partners with 82 independent ski resorts across five regions in North America and Japan. The Pass debuted in 2019 with 36 resort partners, just in time to offer a budget-friendly alternative to the mega passes — Ikon and Epic. While the price increased to $329 for more than160 days of skiing, it’s still a fantastic deal for the 2021-22 season. And good news, Indy Pass announced pricing for the 2022-23 season on March 2 and the price has not (👏🏼 👏🏼 👏🏼). Indy Pass is also offering a Switch pass for those who have a mega pass (Epic, Ikon, and Mountain Collective) for the 2021-2022 season.

As resorts that participate in mega passes feel more corporate, crowds grow and daily lift tickets surge to record levels, ($229 per day at Vail and Deer Valley and $245 for Steamboat on weekends!) independent resorts are thriving. Our team has visited many of them and though most Indy Pass partners are smaller, local ski areas; a good number of them pack a punch terrain-wise. Plus, it's hard to rival the culture and soul of these destinations.

The deepest snow in New England can be found at Jay Peak.

Here are 9 reasons why you should consider skiing at independent ski resorts using an Indy Pass:

  1. Weekend trips. Having two days at each resort works perfectly for a variety of weekend trips

  2. Solid value. At $329 per pass, it offers excellent value for experienced skiers and riders to tack on to an existing mega pass

  3. More skiing, less waiting. Lift lines are typically small to non-existent at independent resorts, meaning you can spend more time going downhill.

  4. Great New England Ski Pass. Recreational skiers and families in the Northeast have access to 17 resorts within driving distance from New England or the broader NYC area including destination resorts Jay Peak, Magic Mountain, Cannon Mountain, Waterville Valley, and Saddleback.

  5. Impressive terrain. 13 of the Indy Pass resorts have over 2,000 vertical feet. Marmot Basin in Calgary has 3,000 vertical feet. View the full list here.

  6. Affordable for college students. Students looking to experience a variety of resorts at a reasonable price will enjoy an Indy Pass. Our guide to skiing from Northeast Colleges features Jay Peak.

  7. Japow. Indy Pass partners with four independent resorts located deep in the interior of northern Tohoku, Japan. Indy Pass refers to this area as "the next frontier in the 'Japow' scene." Plan your own trip or work with Indy Pass partner, Japan Ski Tours, for an all inclusive guided tour.

  8. Exceptional management team. With snowsports marketing veteran, Doug Fish, at the helm, the Indy Pass team has quickly expanded its portfolio to include 81 partner resorts. Newer additions encompass larger, destination resorts like Powder Mountain and Marmot Basin.

  9. Excited for the future. The pass continues to add new destinations and we’re excited for what is to come.

Many young families are priced out of that market and frankly, many middle class individuals have a hard time justifying the cost as well. According to NSAA, the number one reason people leave the sport is cost and the mega resorts really don’t have the structure to address that problem. Their market is really confined to the top 10% of wage earners in the US. This is the gap that the Indy Pass is attempting to fill.”

The Spring Indy Pass is available and offers 164 days of skiing at 82 resorts through April 30. At $189 (as of March 1, 2022) this is a steal for spring skiing access.
