“Awards shows terrify me,” admits Olivia Colman. “Feeling confident and comfortable in the clothes is so important if I’m going to get through it.” For the Golden Globes, the British national treasure called in the big guns to fashion her a kind of “armour”. Giorgio Armani supplied the star, who is nominated for her performances in The Father and The Crown, with a silver power-shouldered jacket which made Colman feel strong, confident and, she says, “more able to cope with it all”.

“It has both simplicity and sophistication – everything that is quintessentially Armani,” asserts Colman of the crystal-flecked spring/summer 2021 Armani Privé look, complete with velvet trousers, elegant point-toe sling-backs, a jet-black embellished clutch and diamonds, of course. “Mr Armani is a genius at making women look and feel amazing.”

The feeling is mutual. “Olivia is so clearly a talented actor, but what makes her particularly special for me is that she can do comedy and drama equally well,” says Mr Armani, who is a fan of The Crown. “Her early days saw her making people laugh, but her roles in more serious productions show how she is not limited to any one genre. That is a great gift.”

Designer collaborations play a formative role in Colman’s most successful character parts. “Three quarters of my job was done before I stood on set for The Crown because of hair, make-up and costume,” she shares of preparing to play the Queen in the Netflix royal drama. “The discussion early on with the designer about the clothes the character wears is so important. You also need to feel comfortable, and believe that your character would make these choices.”

There can be no doubt that Armani Privé was the right decision for Colman’s virtual Globes moment. As her stylist Miranda Almond notes, “this look is perfect for Olivia, as it complements her classic style but with an added edge of brilliance.”
