🚀 DJ Launchpad Headminx 👩🏽🏫
From the LA underground comes Blaque Mária (pronounced “mah-rey-uh”), an organization dedicated to advancing woman, BIPOC, & LGBTQIA+ representation in electronic music.
Founded in 2023 by veteran DJ/producer Symonne, Blaque Mária is an event production company, music academy, and DJ collective. Over the past year, the group has thrown events at CatchOne, Hotel Figueora, Pattern Bar, & Hunter’s Nightclub in Palm Springs. Most notable is their recurring House music party, Blaque Gloss, that is centered on the principles of inclusivity & self-expression and features all-woman DJ line-ups & woman-owned vendors.
In early 2024, Blaque Mária expanded into music education with the singular goal of empowering aspiring DJs who identify as women, BIPOC, and/or LGBTQIA+ by breaking down barriers to entry and fostering a safe & inclusive environment in which to learn.
Blaque Mária Academy welcomed its first cohort of students in April 2024 with its inaugural program, DJ Launchpad, an 8 week beginner program for women & BIPOC DJs that boasts a custom & proprietary curriculum meticulously crafted & honed by its experienced resident DJs. There is already a waitlist for the summer & fall cohorts.
Beyond the Academy, the group regularly writes & shares content pertinent to their mission, such as the weekly "Blaque Theirstory Month" series in February highlighting Black femme & non-binary DJs who were pioneers in House music.
Blaque Mária residents Symonne, Blanc Mamba, & Noel le Freak are each established in their own right, regularly performing in and around Los Angeles at notable underground events & prominent commercial venues, including CatchOne, Station 1640, Avalon, Los Globos, LICKNDIP, Underwar3, & more.
While the residency is small, the Blaque Mária community and extended family is sizable, engaged, & growing. Keep an eye on this heart-first, passionate group of women as they pursue their mission to change the face of electronic music worldwide.
