BLOSSOM

Blossom is a 2D slice-of-life interactive novel that comes to life in front of you. Navigated by a pop-up book controller, players become a part of Aspen's life as she experiences the hardships of childhood expectations and labels.

Each page of the pop-up book portrays a different chapter of Aspen's childhood, requiring players to complete mini-games and narrative-driven interactions to continue the story.

Blossom began as a MFA thesis project made within the Interactive Media and Games department at the University of Southern California.

Blooming Beyond the Page

At it's core, Blossom is a "sort-of" coming of age story centered around three main themes:

Labels - We are given a label the moment we enter this world for the sole purpose of being able to be identified by others. But when others start to ascribe their own labels onto you, they can become all consuming as you try to live up to every version of yourself while fighting against others.

Self-Image - There is a universal experience of doubt and insecurity that comes with being unable to live up to the image people have you. As this version of you slowly consumes your every thought, who often end up asking yourself "Who am I really?".

Reconciliation - From where Aspen starts and where she leaves off, there is a journey of reconciling who she was and the person she's becoming. Acknowledging every part of herself that makes her "Aspen".
