Episode 13: A Conversation with My Junior High Teacher with Ms. Riley

Overview

Susan Riley (or more commonly known as Ms. Riley) is a junior high teacher who taught me nearly a decade ago. It’s remarkable that we’ve stayed in touch, including grabbing lunch and dinner with groups of students that she’s taught over the years. We talk about her career as a teacher and the impact that she has made on the over 3000 students who passed through her classroom. Especially for former students, this is a really special episode that you don’t want to miss!

Highlights & Takeaways

  • How she went from working in theatre, to oil and gas, to going back to university to become a teacher

  • How she “bullied” (in other words, pushed students outside of their comfort zone) in order to help them develop not just academically, but also in their personal growth

  • How she represents a space and a time in the lives of students, and how it makes her happy to know that her students are there and doing well

  • How the pandemic and remote teaching affected her interactions with students

  • Finding something that you love to do and don’t be afraid to make changes if needed
