Hello Mr Rae,
I am writing with regard to tomorrow's vote based on the invocation of resolution 377 (A).
I am a Canadian citizen and was appalled that you, as Canada’s representative to the United Nations abstained from voting in favour of a ceasefire on the 26th of October.
The violence has only escalated since, as evidenced by the fact that the Secretary General evoked article 99 for an immediate ceasefire in Gaza to avoid a humanitarian catastrophe.
Like many millions around the world I would argue that the last two months have demonstrated unfathomable levels of unnecessary human suffering.
You Mr Rae have the power to change this, you must vote in favour of a ceasefire tomorrow, your failure to do so will not only be your consent to genocide, it will place Canada as a nation on the wrong side of history. I am imploring you to use the power available to you to stop the violence immediately.
Please, do the right thing.

I ask that you take immediate action to call for a ceasefire in the Gaza Strip, to stop the mounting civilian death toll in which a child dies every 10 minutes. It is heartbreaking. Please do what you can to ensure that Canada demands an immediate ceasefire to save innocent lives. While I welcome the news that there may soon be a temporary pause in the devastating violence, an enduring ceasefire is the only path towards lasting peace and justice in the region.

Malcolm X's stance on violence, framed by his iconic declaration "by any means necessary," underscores his nuanced and deeply pragmatic perspective. Notably, his unapologetic refusal to cater to whiteness, prioritizing Black liberation. This phrase encapsulates his belief in the right of oppressed individuals to defend themselves, highlighting a commitment to securing freedom, justice, and human dignity.

Malcolm X argued that in the face of systemic oppression and violence, communities must be prepared to protect themselves and assert their often violated human rights through whatever methods were effective and necessary. His perspective was not an endorsement of violence for its own sake but a recognition of the right to self-defence in the context of a society/peoples that were often left no other viable path to change.
